Softball Players of the Week – April 13

IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest Softball Players of the Week are Dixie State’s Nicole Chavez, Academy of Art’s Brenna Mitchell and Chaminade’s Luana Moreno. The awards are based on games played April 6-12.
 
Player of the Week – Nicole Chavez (Dixie State)
2B, Sr., Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala
 
Chavez earned her second weekly honor with a powerful week of games, batting .714 (10-14) with 11 RBI and nine runs scored. She had multiple hits and multiple RBI in all four games, and posted a 1.643 slugging percentage with 11 extra-base hits. She hit three home runs and drove in seven in a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame de Namur. Chavez leads the PacWest in doubles (20) and RBI (48) and is second in runs (50).
 
Pitcher of the Week – Brenna Mitchell (Academy of Art)
RHP, Fr., Fairfield, Calif./Angelo Rodriguez
 
Mitchell had the best week of her young career, throwing 18.2 scoreless innings in four games for the Urban Knights. She allowed just eight hits and one walk, while striking out 19 and earning three wins. She struck out a career-high 14 in a complete game win over Holy Names, the second-most by a pitcher in ART U history. She ranks second in the PacWest in innings pitched (169.0) and strikeouts (113).
 
Newcomer of the Week – Luana Moreno (Chaminade)
RHP, Fr.-RS, Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop
 
Moreno threw the first shutout by a Chaminade starter this season, blanking BYU-Hawaii. She allowed just five hits and struck out two. All four of Moreno’s wins this season have been complete-game efforts.
