Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards – Nov. 28

IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest Men’s Basketball Players of the Week are Michael Smith (California Baptist), Rohndell Goodwin (Chaminade), Chauncey Orr (Hawai’i Pacific) and Ryan O’Connell (Azusa Pacific). The awards are based on games played Nov. 21-27.
 
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Smith (CBU)
G – Sr. – South San Francisco, Calif./El Camino
 
Smith led No. 5 California Baptist to three wins to improve to 6-0 on the season. He averaged 31.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He shot 51.9 percent from the floor, made eight three-pointers and shot 33-for-35 at the free throw line. He scored a career-high 42 points against No. 22 UC San Diego, shooting 11-19 from the field with four three-pointers and 16-of-17 from the free throw line. The scoring output was four points off the CBU record and the most a Lancer has scored since 2004. He averaged 26.5 points per game in the CBU Thanksgiving Classic and had a career-high eight assists against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Smith leads the PacWest and is top-10 in the nation in scoring, averaging 26.8 points per game.
 
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rohndell Goodwin (Chaminade)
G – Sr. – Oakland, Calif./Merrill West
 
Goodwin was named to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational All-Tournament Team, the first Silversword to achieve the honor since 2012. He averaged 20.0 points per game in three contests against Division I opponents, the third-highest of the tournament behind MVP Joel Berry (North Carolina) and Jawun Evans (Oklahoma State). He also averaged 5.7 rebounds per game. He increased his scoring each game, scoring 18 against North Carolina, 20 against UConn and 22 against Tennessee. Goodwin is third in the PacWest in scoring (21.6 ppg) and 13th in rebounding (6.2 rpg).
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Chauncey Orr (Hawai’i Pacific)
G – Sr. – Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green
 
Orr led HPU to three wins on the week to improve to 6-0 on the year. He averaged 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. He matched his season-high with four steals against West Coast Baptist to start the week and then logged his third double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds against West Coast Baptist in the Hoops In Hawai’i Thanksgiving Classic. Orr leads the PacWest in steals (2.2 spg) along with teammate Jordan Martin, and HPU leads the conference in scoring defense (62.0 ppg), opponent field goal percentage (35.4%) and steals (44). The Sharks as a team held their opponents to 59.0 points on the week, shooting 35.2 percent from the field and 28.3 percent from three-point range, and held a +21.3 rebound per game average.
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Ryan O’Connell (Azusa Pacific)
G – Fr.-RS – Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero
 
O’Connell averaged 7.7 points and 3.0 rebounds over three games, playing in just 12.7 minutes per contest. He had career-highs of 14 points and six rebounds in a win over Bethesda. He was 4-for-7 from three-point range. He scored nine points on 3-of-3 shooting in a win over Cal State L.A.
