IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest Women’s Basketball Players of the Week are
Alyssa Weatherd (Dominican),
Jasmin Guinn (Academy of Art) and
Kim Schmelz (Hawai’i Hilo). The awards are based on games played Jan. 25-31.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alyssa Weatherd (Dominican)
G/F, Sr., Carrollton, Texas/Creekview
Weatherd averaged 25.5 points per game on 72.4 percent shooting, both top marks in the PacWest on the week. She also averaged 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals. She scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and had three steals against Azusa Pacific. She then matched her season-high with 29 points against Holy Names, contributing 26 of Dominican’s 64 points in the paint. Weatherd has scored 20 points in four of her last five games, and is fourth in the PacWest in scoring (18.7 ppg) and first in field goal percentage (.591).
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Jasmin Guinn (Academy of Art)
G, Sr., Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley HS
Guinn won her third weekly defensive honor, averaging 14.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game in a pair of wins. She nearly notched a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and a season-best seven steals against Concordia. She followed that with nine rebounds and three steals against Chaminade. Guinn leads the PacWest and is second in the nation in steals (3.8 spg).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Kim Schmelz (Hawai’i Hilo)
F, Fr., Rancho Murieta, Calif./Pleasant Grove
Schmelz averaged 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Vulcans. She scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting against CBU. She had 12 points, eight rebounds and a block in the win over Notre Dame de Namur.
