IRVINE, Calif.
– Fresno Pacific was selected as the favorite to win the 2016 PacWest men’s soccer championship, topping the annual coaches’ preseason poll released Wednesday. The Sunbirds won the 2015 PacWest title, their second in the last three years.

FPU received eight first-place votes and 188 total points to top the poll. The Sunbirds are ranked 22nd in the NSCAA Preseason National Poll, one of five West Region teams in the top-25.

Point Loma (163) was picked second in the preseason poll, and Hawai’i Pacific (154) was the only other team to receive multiple first-place votes to finish third.

FPU senior Jorge Chedraui was named PacWest Preseason Player of the Year. The striker earned his third-career All-PacWest (1st team) honor last season, ranking second in the PacWest in goals (13) and fourth in points (28). He was all-region for the second time and was an NSCAA Second-Team All-American.

Point Loma senior Tyler Allen was named PacWest Preseason Defender of the Year. A first-team All-PacWest defender last season, he helped Point Loma ranked second in the conference and 12th in the nation with a 0.72 goals against average. He notched two assists on the year, including a game-winner against Hawai’i Pacific. Allen was also an all-region selection by the D2CCA (1st team) and NSCAA (3rd team).

Dixie State senior Bradley Trella was named PacWest Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. He was the 2015 PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year following one of the best season in conference history. He led the conference in goals-against average (.594), shutouts (9) and save percentage (.884); ranking second in the nation in save percentage and 10th in GAA. Trella posted seven-consecutive shutouts, all against PacWest opponents, and amassed a shutout streak of 769:09, the ninth-longest individual streak in NCAA history. He was a second-team all-region selection by both the D2CCA and NSCAA.

HPU led the conference with four Preseason All-PacWest selections. Fresno Pacific had three members, and Dixie State and Point Loma had two. Allen, Chedraui, Trella and BYU-Hawaii senior Jake McRae were All-PacWest First Team members in 2015.
