2017 WOMEN'S SOCCER ALL-PACWEST TEAM
IRVINE, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Dixie State’s
Darian Murdock was selected as the PacWest Women’s Soccer Player of the Year leading the selections to the 2017 all-conference team.
Murdock wasn’t the only Trailblazer to receive an award as her teammate
Montana Hadley was named the PacWest Defender of the Year. California Baptist’s
Sara Escobedo was picked as the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the Lancers to their third conference title in program history.
Ellie Mujushi from Notre Dame de Namur was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year.
Fresno Pacific also earned two awards after going unbeaten in its final nine matches of the season to come within a point of first place.
Whitney Snow earned recognition as the PacWest Newcomer of the Year and
Rob Podeyn is the PacWest Coach of the Year.
Murdock led the conference in goals, finding the back of the net 19 times in her senior season. She also added four assists for a PacWest-leading 42 points. Murdock also had three hat tricks this season and put her boot on three goals in the Trailblazers’ 4-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur. Murdock averaged 2.39 points per game, which ranks sixth in the nation, while her 19 goals ranks fourth. The PacWest’s Preseason Player of the Year also tallied eight game-winning goals, which is the third most in NCAA Division II.
Hadley led the Dixie State defense that had a goals against average of 1.04, which ranked sixth in the conference. Dixie State shut out 38.9 percent of its opponents, producing seven shutouts, which is tied for third most in the PacWest. Hadley also helped the defensive line hold opponents to just 5.11 shots on goal per game. On the offensive end of the field, Hadley also helped the Trailblazers. Her six assists ranks in the top 100 in the nation for all positions.
Escobedo played a big role in California Baptist’s third conference title in the final weeks of the season. The senior goalkeeper recorded five shutouts in the final eight games, including 426 consecutive scoreless minutes to wrap up the regular season. Sixty of those minutes were in overtime, where Escobedo allowed the Lancers to earn three ties, which proved to be just enough to clinch the conference title and book a playoff spot. Escobedo led the league in goals against average at .709 and had a conference-best 85.9 save percentage.
In her freshman season, Mujushi made an immediate impact for the Argonauts, who finished conference play with a winning record for the first time since 2012. Mujushi ranked second in the conference in scoring with 13 goals along with three assists. The First Team All-PacWest selection had three multi-goal games this season and scored four game-winners. Her average of 0.81 goals per game ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II.
Along with being picked as the Newcomer of the Year,
Whitney Snow was also selected as to the First Team All-PacWest. The junior came up with her best plays at key times with four of her six goals this season counting as game-winners. One of those game-winning goals was in the 74
th minute of Fresno Pacific’s first win over Azusa Pacific in program history. Snow also had four assists on the season as she helped the Sunbirds to a program record nine conference wins.
Fresno Pacific’s head coach Podeyn was selected by his peers as the PacWest Coach of the Year. In just his third year with the program, he led it to its best finish in the PacWest since joining the conference. The Sunbirds had an incredible turn around in its 2017 season to be able to finish within five minutes of the conference title. Fresno Pacific started the year 2-6-0 before answering with a seven-game winning streak. The Sunbirds beat California Baptist and Azusa Pacific at home. The Sunbirds led Hawai`i Pacific with five minutes to go in the season finale, needing a win to clinch the conference title, but ultimately settled for a tie. The Sunbirds’ nine PacWest wins and the win over Azusa Pacific were both program firsts.
Notre Dame de Namur led the league in first-team selections with
Alina Martinez,
Abigail Dyer and
Vanessa Sanchez joining Mujushi on the first team. Concordia’s freshman
Carmany Jones and three-time all-conference selection
McKenna Carrillo both represented the Eagles on the first team.
Ebony Madrid from Hawai`i Pacific and three-time selection
Keagan Bolibol from Point Loma rounded out the First Team All-PacWest.
