SURPRISE, Ariz. – The top-four seeds all advanced after quarterfinal play to open the PacWest Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday. Hawai’i Pacific, Azusa Pacific, BYU-Hawaii and Hawai’i Hilo will play in the semifinals on Friday.
 
HPU beat No. 8 Sonoma State, 5-1, winning at first and third doubles and losing at second doubles in a tiebreaker (11-9). The Sharks’ top-two singles players, Filip Dolezel and Torben Otto, won in straight-sets and No. 4 was a retirement by Sonoma State to finish off the match. APU swept No. 7 Point Loma, with Christian Schmid and Sheppard Newcomb winning at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
 
BYU-Hawaii beat No. 6 Holy Names, 5-1. The Seasiders won at second and third doubles, and Simon Guillin and Chia-Hua Lu posting identical wins (6-1, 6-0) and No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Guillermo Ucelay clinched the match at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2). Hawai’i Hilo beat No. 5 Concordia, 5-1. The Vulcans swept doubles play, including a tiebreaker win on the first court. Man Hon Ko and Thijs Hagen won points for Concordia at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, before Vaclav Slezak and Alex Fillat clinched for the Vulcans at the top-two courts.
 
In the consolation round Friday, Concordia will play Sonoma State, and Holy Names will face Point Loma.
