Hommes Scores 70 Points & Weekly Honor To Start 2018-19 Season

IRVINE, Calif. -- After the first week of the 2018-19 season, Chaminade is the first PacWest team to earn multiple wins on the season, beating Alaska and Alaska Anchorage at home.
 
Erik Scheive led the Silverswords offense with 32 points on the week, including 19 against Alaska Anchorage. In the win against Chaminade, Nick Anderson got a block as time expired to preserve a two-point victory in the season-opener.
 
Point Loma opened the season with a split, beating Montana State Billings before getting edged by Saint Martin’s, which is receiving votes in the national poll. The Sea Lions were led by transfer Daulton Hommes, who scored 70 points in the two games. The 2017-18 first-team All-GNAC selection was taking on two teams from his former conference and exploded for over 30 points in both games.
 
Hawai`i Pacific claimed a dominant win over Alaska, 92-77. PacWest Preseason Player of the Year Jonathan Janssen was named the tournament MVP after he scored 22 points in the victory to go along with eight rebounds and four assists.
 
Next week, Azusa Pacific will get its first look at West Region competition, taking on Cal State LA on Tuesday before traveling to Seattle Pacific. Point Loma will host No. 24 UC San Diego on Sunday in one of the intriguing West Region matchups so far this season.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Daulton Hommes, Point Loma
G, Jr., 6-8 -- Lynden, Wash.
Hommes had a memorable debut in a Point Loma uniform against familiar opponents, scoring 70 points against Montana State Billings and Saint Martin’s. The transfer from Western Washington made 20 of 33 field-goal attempts and knocked down 10 shots from beyond the arc. Hommes added 13 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. In the win against MSUB, the junior made 7 of 11 three-point attempts and finished with 33 points. The next night, Hommes scored another 37 points against Saint Martin’s, making 16 of 17 free throws.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Alex Talma, Biola
F, Sr., 6-8 -- Auckland, New Zealand
In the first weekend of the season, Biola ranked second in the conference in scoring defense and the Eagles 6-foot-8 forward led the effort. Talma recorded double-doubles in both games as the Eagles split against Cal State San Marcos and Cal State LA. The native of Auckland had 13 rebounds in the season-opening victory against Cal State San Marcos. Talma recorded two steals and blocks against Cal State LA and finished the week with 26 points and 24 rebounds.
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Alex Wright, Biola
G, Fr., 6-5 -- Riverside, Calif.
Wright scored 20 points in his collegiate debut against Cal State San Marcos, leading Biola to its first win of the season. The freshman made 7 of 11 shots, including two from beyond the arc. He added nine rebounds and three assists on the week, playing in 67 minutes in the first two games of the year. Biola is one of five teams in the conference to start the season with a 1-1 record after the first weekend of play in the 2018-19 season.
