Bauder’s Record-Breaking Season Highlights PacWest Awards

2018 VOLLEYBALL ALL-PACWEST AWARDS

IRVINE, Calif. – Biola’s Sierra Bauder finished the regular season with the PacWest single-season record for hitting percentage to be selected by PacWest coaches as the PacWest Player of the Year, leading selections to the 2018 All-PacWest team.

Point Loma earned two special awards with Cara Keturakis being named the Setter of the Year and Rachael Schlect is the PacWest Freshman of the Year. Notre Dame de Namur’s Taylor Garcia earned recognition as the PacWest Libero of the Year, while Alana Handy from Chaminade is the Newcomer of the Year. PacWest Champion Azusa Pacific’s head coach Chris Keife is the PacWest Coach of the Year.

Bauder helped Biola finish in second place in the PacWest for the second time in as many seasons. The senior middle blocker played all 111 sets so far this season and recorded a team-high 294 kills for a .440 hitting percentage, which currently stands as the PacWest single-season record and ranks second in the nation. Bauder has also registered 121 total blocks, ranking second in the conference. The native of Phoenix, Arizona, put together one of her best performances of the year when Biola swept Point Loma as she recorded 13 kills on 15 attacks with no errors to go along with four blocks.

Keturakis was a two-time Player of the Week in 2018 as she helped Point Loma earn a fifth-place finish in the PacWest. The junior setter played in every point for the Sea Lions on the season as she racked up a conference-leading 1061 assists. Keturakis pushed her career total to 3,132, cracking the PacWest’s all-time top-10 list for career assists. She also recorded 133 kills for a .283 hitting percentage to go along with 226 digs and 48 blocks. The native of Surrey, Canada notched two triple-doubles on the season as well, leading the PacWest in that category.

Handy helped Chaminade return to the NCAA West Regional for the first time in over a decade in her first year in a Silverswords uniform. The junior outside hitter was among the PacWest’s leading attackers throughout the season and she finished with 338 kills, which ranks third in the conference. Handy also played a big role in Chaminade’s defense with 328 digs and 30 blocks in the regular season. In the Silverswords’ four-set win at Point Loma, Handy had one of her best matches of the year with 18 kills, 20 digs and three blocks.

Garcia was the PacWest’s leader in digs during the 2018 season with 579 to earn recognition as the PacWest Libero of the Year. Garcia had only 43 receiving errors on the season and even went on a streak of three-consecutive matches without a receiving error. The sophomore libero had a season-high 33 digs against Cal State San Marcos, and against Holy Names, Garcia recorded four aces and 24 digs in a four-set victory.

Schlect was selected as the PacWest Freshman of the Week four times and was among the PacWest’s kills leaders throughout the season. The freshman outside hitter finished the year with 3.25 kills per set, which ranks third in the conference. Schlect tallied 328 kills, 33 aces and 36 blocks on the season for a total of 381 points. She also added 241 digs for nine double-doubles on the season. Early in the season, Point Loma picked up a big four-set win against Cal State Monterey Bay in which Schlect hit a season-high 23 kills with 14 digs.

Keife led Azusa Pacific to its first PacWest title in program history as the Cougars won their final eight matches to hold off Biola for the crown. The Cougars went 24-6 on the season to earn the No. 5 seed at the NCAA West Regional. Keife has been the head coach at Azusa Pacific for 15 seasons and has now won 340 matches at the end of the 2018 regular season. The Cougars won their first nine PacWest matches and on October 23, avenged their loss to Biola with a four-set win at home. That kickstarted Azusa Pacific’s eight-match winning streak to conclude the regular season as PacWest Champions.

Hawai`i Hilo finished in third place in the PacWest standings and is represented on the first-team All-PacWest by Bria Beale, who had 297 kills and 306 digs on the season. Christina DenBoer earned first-team recognition for Biola after averaging 3.11 kills per set on the season. She also tallied 21 aces, which ranked in the top 10 in the conference.

Azusa Pacific’s Julianne Miller was a first-team selection, making her third All-PacWest appearance in as many seasons. Miller’s .407 hitting percentage ranked second in the conference as she became the PacWest’s career leader in hitting percentage. The junior also ranked second in blocks per set with 1.11.

Emma Tecklenburg from Chaminade earned two PacWest Player of the Week selections and was the PacWest leader in kills with 3.46 per set. It is the junior’s second All-PacWest honor as she helped Chaminade take third place in the PacWest this season.
