IRVINE, Calif. – Point Loma won two of the five titles in the fall season to lead the PacWest Commissioner’s Cup Standings for the first time with a narrow edge over second-place Azusa Pacific.
 
The Point Loma athletics department entered the 2018-19 academic year with two PacWest titles in its history. The Sea Lions have already doubled that number this season with their first women’s cross country title and their third women’s soccer title.
 
Point Loma won one of the most dramatic cross country races in the history of the PacWest Championships, beating Azusa Pacific with a 3-2 head-to-head tiebreaker after both teams finished with 38 points. Hannah Benoit-Bucher led the Sea Lions with a time of 22:17.9 to take fourth place with Marissa Bartello finishing right behind her.
 
In women’s soccer, Point Loma put together one of the most dominant seasons the PacWest has ever seen with a 17-match unbeaten streak, including going unbeaten during conference play. It was the Sea Lions’ defense that stood out the most about the way Point Loma dominated. Led by PacWest Defender of the Year and four-time All-PacWest selection Keegan Bolibol along with Goalkeeper of the Year and Freshman of the Year Emma Hinson, the Sea Lion defense recorded 14 shutouts on the season.
 
Point Loma went 10-0-1 in the regular season with PacWest Player of the Year Julia Glaser leading the offense in a record-breaking season. She was also named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year after scoring a PacWest single-season record 10 game-winning goals. The tenth of those game-winners came against Chico State to send Point Loma to the NCAA West Regional semifinals. Kristi Kiely was named the PacWest Coach of the Year in her first season at PLNU to give the Sea Lions a clean sweep of the PacWest awards.
 
Point Loma also took fourth place in men’s soccer and fifth place in volleyball to round out a strong fall season in San Diego with a Commissioner’s Cup score of 12.75 going into the basketball season.
 
Azusa Pacific is right behind Point Loma with a score of 12.4 after winning two PacWest titles in the fall. The Cougars have now won 22 PacWest titles since joining the conference in 2012-13. The Cougars won both the volleyball and men’s soccer titles.
 
Azusa Pacific’s men’s soccer program won its second PacWest title and finished the season with a 17-2-1 record, including a perfect 11-0-0 in PacWest play. The Cougars’ duo of Gabriel Costa and Arturo Astorga became the third and fourth players in PacWest history to record double-digit goals and assists in the same season. Costa was named the PacWest Player of the Year after scoring 14 goals and recording 13 assists. He also had the game-winning goal in overtime against Cal State LA in the NCAA West Regional semifinals.
 
Azusa Pacific volleyball won its first conference title in program history by going 20-2 in conference play. The Cougars got through a tough trip to Hawai`i with two five-set victories while finishing the year on an eight-match winning streak to hold off Biola for the title. Julianne Miller became the PacWest’s all-time leader in career hitting percentage this season after recording a .407 mark with 286 kills to earn first-team All-PacWest honors.
 
The Cougars also took second place in women’s cross country, fifth place in men’s cross country and fifth place in women’s soccer for an average of 12.4 points.
 
Biola is right behind the other two southern California schools with an average score of 11.8. The Eagles were led to their first PacWest title by Gabe Plendcio, who won the individual title in men’s cross country. Biola went on to win the NCCAA National Championships. Biola took second place in volleyball, third place in women’s cross country, fifth place in men’s soccer and sixth place in women’s soccer.
 
Concordia is in fourth place at the end of the fall season with a score of 9.1 after finishing in a tie for second place in women’s soccer and third place in men’s soccer. Fresno Pacific is right behind the Eagles with a score of 9.0 with the help of a second-place finish in men’s soccer.
 
Hawai`i Hilo finished in a tie for second place in women’s soccer and a tie for third place in volleyball to take sixth place in the Commissioner’s Cup Standings with a score of 8.4. Hawai`i Pacific’s score of 8.0 lands the Sharks in seventh place after taking fourth place at the men’s cross country PacWest Championships.
 
Notre Dame de Namur’s best result came with a third-place finish in men’s cross country to take eighth place overall. Academy of Art finished second in men’s cross country and fourth in women’s cross country to place ninth as an athletic department in the fall. Chaminade tied for third place in volleyball and finished with an average score of 5.1 for 10th place. Dominican is in 11th place followed by Holy Names to round out the 12 PacWest schools.
