Three Sunbirds Earn Track & Field Weekly Awards

IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest  Track & Field Athletes of the Week are Lawrence Cairo, Elijah McDowell and Brie Courseault from Fresno Pacific and Hannah Hensley from Academy of Art. The awards are based on competition from February 26-March 4.
 
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Brie Courseault, Fresno Pacific

Courseault took first place in both events that she competed in at the Kim Duyst Invitational, winning both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. In the 100-meter dash, Courseault, defeated her teammate Mikala McClain by a hundredth of a second to win with a time of 12.48 seconds. The sophomore took first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.06, which is just 0.6 seconds away from an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.
 
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hannah Hensley, Academy of Art

Hensley competed in three different events, finishing no worse than second place in any of the events and claiming two first-place finishes. The senior won the high jump and long jump and took second place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.39 seconds. In the high jump, Hensley cleared 5-feet 7.75-inches to win the event finishing more than three inches higher than the rest of the field. That mark was also better than the NCAA Division II provisional qualifier. Her best long jump landed at 17-feet 11.5-inches to win the event by over half a foot.
 
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Lawrence Cairo Jr., Fresno Pacific

Cairo won the 200-meter dash and took second place in the 100-meter dash at the Kim Duyst Invitational that was hosted by Stanislaus State. Cairo won the 200 with a time of 22.19 seconds to edge Humboldt State's Corey Berner by 0.32 seconds. It was his first time running the 200 this year, finishing 0.33 seconds behind his personal best. In the 100, Cairo cross the finish line in 11.31 seconds to take second place. 
 
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Elijah McDowell, Fresno Pacific
Fr.- Stockton, Calif./Lodi

At the Kim Duyst Invitational, McDowell took fourth place in the high jump and 12th place in the long jump. In the high jump, the freshman cleared 6-feet 3.5-inches, which was the best mark of any PacWest athlete, trailing three jumpers from the CCAA. In the long jump, McDowell landed at a distance of 19-feet 11-inches, which was also the best by a PacWest athlete in the event.
