IRVINE, Calif. -- This week’s PacWest Track & Field Athletes of the Week are
Connor Bracken and
David Booker from Azusa Pacific, and
Hannah Hensley and Rian Young Werner from Academy of Art. The awards are based on competition from April 9-15.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rian Young-Werner, Academy of Art
Jr. – Redlands, Calif./Central Valley HS
Young-Werner toed the line an incredible six different times in the Cal State East Bay Invitational with appearances in the prelims and finals of the 100m, the 4x100m relay, the 400m, and both the long and triple jumps. The junior walked away with six first-place marks. She went 12.21 seconds to claim first of 23 in the 100-meter prelims then added a 12.36-second mark to win the final. She also contributed to the top result (47.59 seconds) in the 4x100m relay. In her first collegiate 400-meter dash, she beat out 23 others with a time of 57.47 seconds. She was additionally in two field events she regularly contests, where she propelled herself to an 18-5 (5.61m) for the day's top long jump and added an NCAA Division II provisional qualification with her season-best 40-5 (12.32m) in the triple jump.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hannah Hensley, Academy of Art
Sr. – Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest HS
In the high jump at the Cal State East Bay Invitational, Hensley posted not only the best mark of her ART U career, but an NCAA automatic qualifier as well. She cleared the 5-10.75 (1.80m) height to better her previous school record (5-10) from nearly one month ago to the day.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Connor Bracken, Azusa Pacific
Sr. – Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego HS
Bracken again beat his season-best in the 400-meter hurdles finishing the race this time with a result of 52.87 seconds to win the race at the Highlander Twilight on the campus of UC Riverside. Bracken also ran the opening leg of Azusa Pacific’s 4x400 team that finished in a time of 3:25.79.
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
David Booker, Azusa Pacific
Sr. – Tulare, Calif./ Fresno CC
Booker took second place in the men’s long jump with a distance of 23 feet, 7.5 inches (7.20 meters), which was just a couple inches shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Booker finished ahead of five NCAA Division I athletes in the event to earn second.
