IRVINE, Calif. – After being one of the PacWest’s most dominant pitchers and a dangerous hitter in the 2018 season, California Baptist’s
Andrew Bash was selected by the coaches around the conference as the PacWest Player of the Year to lead this year’s selections to the All-PacWest Baseball Team.
Bash had the second-most wins of any pitcher in the PacWest this year with eight while also recording a conference-leading .417 batting average as he led California Baptist to a third-place finish in the PacWest standings. The sophomore hit 14 home runs with a conference-best .785 slugging percentage on the season. On the rubber, Bash recorded a 2.72 ERA with an 8-2 record. He struck out 65 batters in 76 innings of work.
Point Loma’s
Garrett Irvin led the conference in ERA at 1.63 in his freshman season to earn recognition as the PacWest Pitcher of the Year and the PacWest Freshman of the Year. It’s the first time since 2016 that a PacWest pitcher has recorded an ERA below 2.00 as Irvin also registered a conference-leading .209 opposing batting average. The freshman has a 6-1 record with three complete games in 13 starts. He struck out 95 batters in 88.1 innings of work with just 17 walks to help Point Loma finish second in the PacWest standings.
Azusa Pacific’s
Isaiah Carranza was named a first-team selection as starting pitcher and is the PacWest Newcomer of the Year after recording a conference-best nine wins on the season. Carranza has started 13 games with a 9-1 record and a 3.89 ERA. He threw 74 innings with 86 strikeouts and recorded two complete-game shutouts. Carranza helped lead Azusa Pacific to the program’s second-consecutive PacWest title with six of his wins coming during conference play.
Two players were named by the coaches as the PacWest Co-Defensive Players of the Year as Dixie State’s
Jake Davison and Point Loma’s
Adam Rios shared the honors. At catcher, Davison directed a pitching staff that earned 25 wins on the season. Davison had 263 putouts and 45 assists with only one error on the season. Dixie State’s opposing base-stealers only advanced safely on 33 of 62 attempts. Rios had 63 putouts and 119 assists in the infield on the season. He ranked sixth in the conference in assists and helped Point Loma turn 25 double plays on the season.
After leading Azusa Pacific to a second-consecutive PacWest title, head coach
Paul Svagdis is the PacWest Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, becoming just the second in conference history to win the honor in consecutive years. Azusa Pacific wrapped up the regular season with a 39-9 record and a 29-9 effort in conference play after starting the year with 16-consecutive wins to earn the No. 1 rankings in the NCBWA National Rankings. The Cougars won the final two games of the season against Point Loma to clinch the PacWest title. In the penultimate series of the regular season, Svagdis earned his 517th career win to become the all-time winningest coach at Azusa Pacific.
California Baptist’s
Luke Navigato and Azusa Pacific’s
Pablo O’Connor both earned their third career All-PacWest recognition.
Dylan Stowell,
Justin Gomez and
Haloa Dudoit all were named to the first team for their second all-conference honors. Azusa Pacific and California Baptist both had three first-team honorees, while Point Loma had three and Biola had two in its first year in the PacWest. Hawai`i Pacific’s
Christian Kapeliela is the All-PacWest First Team first baseman after finishing second in the PacWest in batting average for the season.
