Stanikova, Slezak Named PacWest Players Of The Week

IRVINE, Calif. – A busy weekend in Kailua-Kona for PacWest tennis highlighted an exciting second week of the tennis season with Hawai`i Hilo, Hawai`i Pacific, Holy Names, Chaminade and UC San Diego playing each other on the Big Island.

On the women's side, Hawai`i Hilo earned two 7-0 victories against Chaminade before taking a 5-0 loss to Hawai`i Pacific. The Sharks also had a 7-0 win over Holy Names to improve to 3-0 on the season. On Monday, Holy Names earned its third win of the season, beating Chaminade, 7-0.

A couple of matches between West Region teams also took place in California with Cal State LA defeating Biola, 6-1. Amanda Schneider earned a tight win over Esther Lee at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. On Sunday, Sonoma State hosted Academy of Art, and the Urban Knights earned a 5-2 win in their season opener.

This week, Point Loma, Sonoma State and Stanislaus State will all travel to UC San Diego. Cal State LA stays at home this week to host Sonoma State and Academy of Art. Concordia will also be at home, hosting Azusa Pacific, Sonoma State and Academy of Art on three consecutive days.

On the men's side, Hawai`i Pacific and Hawai`i Hilo both went 2-0 on Kailua-Kona, beating Holy Names and UC San Diego. On Friday, Holy Names took a 6-1 loss to UC San Diego. Monday's highly-anticipated match between Hawai`i Hilo and Hawai`i Pacific was rained out. The Vulcans will travel to Honolulu on April 6 to face Hawai`i Pacific.

This week, Sonoma State continues its 2019 campaign with three road matches, traveling to Biola, Concordia and UC San Diego. Friday's match with Concordia will be the Eagles' season opener.
 
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Monika Stanikova, Academy of Art

For the third time in their decorated careers, Stanikova and Sonoma State's Jensyn Warren faced each other when Academy of Art visited Sonoma State on Sunday. Warren won the first meeting between the two teams' respective No. 1 singles players. Stanikova avenged that loss by beating Warren in the ITA Fall West Regional championship match on September 29. On Sunday, the native of Trencin, Slovakia, won the rubber match, coming back from behind to win in a match tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. The battle of the top-2 singles players in the West Region was Stanikova's first match of the spring season as she led Academy of At to a 5-2 victory. The senior also won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Stanikova now has a career record of 27-17 at No. 1 singles for the Urban Knights.
 
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Vaclav Slezak, Hawai`i Hilo

Slezak entered the season with an impressive career record of 33-9 at No. 1 singles for the Vulcans and he started his senior year on a strong note, adding two more wins to his career singles record. Slezak opened the season against Holy Names' Hugo Colpart, who is ranked No. 37 in the nation. Slezak won both sets against Colpart in tiebreakers, taking the match 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in the first meeting between the two players. The next day Slezak won in much quicker fashion, dispatching UC San Diego's No. 1 Marc Isaia, 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Slezak won both of his matches with Alessandro Giuliato by the same score, 6-3. The duo now has a career record of 19-3 at No. 1 doubles for Hawai`i Hilo.
