Point Loma’s Hommes Leads PacWest Awards As Player Of The Year

2019 ALL-PACWEST MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM

IRVINE, Calif.
– The 2019 PacWest Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team is led by Point Loma’s Daulton Hommes, who was selected by the conference’s coaches as the PacWest Player and Newcomer of the Year after leading the Sea Lions to their first PacWest regular season title in program history.

Point Loma’s head coach Ryan Looney was selected by his peers as the PacWest Coach of the Year. After breaking his own blocks record, Selom Mawugbe from Azusa Pacific is the PacWest Defender of the Year and Concordia’s Kayle Knuckles is the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

Hommes led the PacWest in scoring with 22 points per game. The transfer from Western Washington scored at least 30 points in six different games this season, and he scored 471 points during conference play. Hommes shot .535 from the field and had a conference-best .465 mark from beyond the arc. The junior also had 164 rebounds and 40 assists in the regular season. He has scored 617 points so far this season, which is the seventh-most in PacWest history.

Mawugbe has recorded 98 blocks this season with the chance to become the first player in PacWest history to record 100 blocks in a single season. As a sophomore last year, Mawugbe broke the PacWest single season record in blocks with 89 before breaking his own record this year. He finished the regular season with 10-consecutive games with at least two blocks. Mawugbe led the league in rebounds with 189 and tallied 31 steals in the regular season.

Knuckles averaged 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in his freshman campaign as he helped Concordia finish in second place in the PacWest standings. The freshman had two 20-point games and made 35.5 percent of his shots from beyond the arc in the regular season. In the Eagles’ overtime win against Point Loma, Knuckles played 42 minutes and scored 13 points in their biggest win of the season.

In his third season at Point Loma, Looney led the program to its first PacWest title in program history in a record-breaking season. The Sea Lions recorded the best start to conference play in the history of the PacWest by winning all of their first 14 games. Then Point Loma went on to win six of its final eight games to set another conference record with 20 PacWest wins in one season. The Sea Lions enter the PacWest Championships as the No. 2 team in the West Region with a 24-4 record on the season, which is the most wins in a single season by the Sea Lions since making the move to NCAA Division II.

Andrija Blatancic helped Academy of Art reach its first PacWest Championships in program history and is on the first team All-PacWest. The junior transfer averaged 17.8 points per game in the regular season. Chaminade’s Tyler Cartaino and Grant Dressler were each named to the All-PacWest first team. Cartaino leads the league in field goal percentage at 60.1, while Dressler made a PacWest-best 69 shots from beyond the arc in the regular season. Brian Chambers from Concordia recorded a league-best 65 steals and 127 assists in the regular season to earn All-PacWest recognition for the third time in his career. Point Loma’s Josh Rodriguez made it a perfect 4 for 4 in his career in being named to the All-PacWest team for the fourth time in a row.
