2018-19 COMMISSIONER'S CUP STANDINGS
IRVINE, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific won three of its six PacWest titles this season in the spring to come from behind and win the 2019 PacWest Commissioner's Cup with the second highest score in conference history at 12.962 points.
After the fall and winter seasons, Point Loma had the lead in the standings, and the Sea Lions finished in second place with a score of 11.364 points, which is the best result in the athletic department's history. The other schools that recorded their best finish ever were Biola, Fresno Pacific and Holy Names.
In the span of 24 hours, Azusa Pacific won three conference titles this spring. Shortly after the Cougars' baseball team secured first place in the PacWest standings, both the men's and women's track & field teams won the PacWest Championships on their home track. It was the fourth year in a row that Azusa Pacific had won both track & field titles and the third-consecutive year that the Cougars won the baseball title. All three teams are still competing in the NCAA postseason with the baseball team in the NCAA West Regional Championship Series, while the track & field teams are competing at nationals this weekend. The Cougars won a total of six conference titles this year, which is tied for the most by a PacWest school in a single season.
Point Loma won four PacWest titles this year, including the men's basketball team's PacWest Tournament win. The Sea Lions finished runner-up in both women's track & field and baseball in the spring. Point Loma advanced to the NCAA postseason this spring in women's golf, women's track & field and baseball. Point Loma has now won six PacWest titles in its history.
Concordia won the PacWest title in softball this spring to move into third place in the Commissioner's Cup standings, making it three years in a row that the Eagles have placed in the top three. After winning the PacWest title, Concordia went on to advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship Series as the No. 1 seed.
Biola finished the 2018-19 year in fourth place overall, but with the second most total points, averaging 8.545 points across all 15 sports. The Eagles won their first PacWest title in the fall in men's cross country and finished runner-up in women's golf in the spring. Biola moved up in the standings significantly after finishing in eighth place in its first year in the PacWest in 2017-18.
Fresno Pacific finished in fifth place for its best result in seven years in the PacWest. The Sunbirds finished in third place in women's track & field for their best result of the spring. They also competed in women's tennis for the first time in six years and advanced to the PacWest quarterfinals.
Hawai`i Hilo made the biggest jump forward of any PacWest school since last year, improving six spots to take sixth place in the Commissioner's Cup. The Vulcans finished runner-up in three different spring sports, taking second place in men's tennis, baseball and softball. The men's tennis team is currently competing in the quarterfinals of the NCAA National Championships.
Hawai`i Pacific won the third most titles of any PacWest school, winning both men's and women's tennis in the spring after winning the PacWest Women's Basketball Championships. The Sharks have now won 31 PacWest titles in their history, which is the most of any active school and the third-most overall.
Academy of Art had a great spring, winning the women's golf title along with runner-up finishes in women's tennis and men's track & field. It was the first title ever for the women's golf team and the seventh PacWest title for Academy of Art across all sports. Dominican wrapped up the year in ninth place with the help of a runner-up finish in men's golf. Notre Dame de Namur took 10th place after a strong season in the revamped cross country and track & field programs, while Chaminade finished in 11th place. Holy Names took 12th place in the Commissioner's Cup standings and won its first PacWest title in any sport, by winning the PacWest Men's Golf Championships.
