IRVINE, Calif. -- For the second year in a row,
Mobolade Ajomale from Academy of Art is the PacWest Male Athlete of the Year, while Dominican's
Natalie Diaz is the 2018-19 Female Athlete of the Year as voted on by the PacWest Athletic Directors for the highest individual athletic honor in the conference.
Ajomale won his 10th career national title in men's track & field this season for Academy of Art, winning the 200-meter dash. He was also a three-time All-American in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay to add to his career total of 20 All-American honors. Ajomale won five PacWest titles this season to earn recognition as the Track Athlete of the Meet at the PacWest Championships and Track Athlete of the Year. He was later recognized as the USTFCCCA Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year for the NCAA West Region.
Diaz earned her second PacWest Player of the Year award in men's basketball and was named on Wednesday as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row as well. In her senior year, Diaz led the Penguins to the NCAA West Regional with a PacWest record 26 points per game, which was the second most in the nation. The D2CCA named Diaz a second-team All-American and she was a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Ajomale is the PacWest's first repeat winner for Male Athlete of the Year and Diaz is the first athlete from Dominican to earn Female Athlete of the Year. Diaz is the third basketball player to earn the award, joining California Baptist's Cassidy Mihalko and Azusa Pacific's Troy Leaf. Ajomale is the second track & field athlete to earn the award along with Vashti Thomas from Academy of Art, who was the first PacWest Female Athlete of the Year when the award was introduced in 2012-13.
