Biola Keeps Rolling, ART U's Vaughan Throws 3 Gems and DUC's Tobola Swings a Hot Bat

Biola won five of six games to strengthen their spot on the top of the standings. Academy of Art's Kayla Vaughan helped the Urban Knights take four from Menlo and Kate Tobola from Dominican had a .636 OBP to help the Penguins to three wins.

Biola successfully navigated the islands, going 5-1 in games against Chaminade and Hawai`i Hilo. Academy of Art had its best weekend of the season with four straight wins over Menlo, riding the arm of Kayla Vaughan who gave up just one earned run in three wins. Dominican took three of four from Jessup in a big series, in part due to Kate Tobola's 8-for-16 week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominican's Kate Tobola, SS, Jr., 5-9, Suisun City, Calif.                            

Dominican's Kate Tobola was on base all series as the Penguins took three of four games from Jessup. The junior shortstop had an on-base percentage of .636, hitting .500 (8-for-16) with four walks and two hit by pitches. She had three doubles in the four games, scored seven times and drove in three runs. One of those doubles came in walk-off fashion during a 2-1 Penguin win as Dominican slipped past the Warriors, winning the series against the team directly ahead of the them in the standings. Tobola improved her batting average from .258 to .293 in the four games. 

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art's Kayla Vaughan, P/UTL, Soph., 5-6, R/R, San Diego        
Academy of Art's Kayla Vaughan was spectacular during a four-game sweep of Menlo, pocketing three wins in the pitching circle. The sophomore pitched a total of 18.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, just one earned run, five walks and eight strikeouts. That gave her a 0.37 ERA on the week, as she picked up her fifth, sixth, and seventh wins of the year. During her three appearances, which included a two-inning relief stint, she went 14.2 straight innings without giving up a run. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Biola Eagles. The Eagles won five straight games in Hawai`i before finally dropping the series finale with Hilo to improve to 32-14 overall and to 24-6 in the PacWest. Counting games the previous week at Hawaii Pacific, the Eagles went 8-1 on their business trip to the islands. DJ Symons did the bulk of the pitching circle work with 23.2 innings, going 4-0 with 22 stikeouts. Raquel Reyes picked up a win as well, totalling 9.2 innings and allowing just two earned runs. The Eagles had won nine straight prior to the loss to the Vulcans, and are an impressive 14-5 this season on the road. They have now opened up a three-game lead over defending champion Concordia. 

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: Some big games loom this week, including a Friday doubleheader between Biola and Concordia. On Saturday, Concordia will be at Azusa Pacific in another big encounter. Additionally, Hawaii Pacific is at Jessup and Dominican this week, Menlo travels to Vanguard, and Jessup is at Academy of Art  For the complete 2025 PacWest schedule, click here. 

ROAD TO IRVINE: It's still three weeks until the 2025 Pacific West Conference Softball Championships in Irvine, but it's worth taking a look at where we currently sit in the fight for the four tournament spots. As mentioned above, Biola leads the pack with a 24-6 mark, followed by Concordia at 20-8. Azusa Pacific is third (20-10), and Jessup is fourth (18-11). But the Warriors are not yet eligible for postseason play, putting Dominican (19-12) currently in that coveted fourth spot. Hawaii Hilo (16-14) is also in contention, followed by Vanguard (11-17), Hawaii Pacific (9-18), Academy of Art (8-20), Menlo (7-18) and Chaminade (8-24). 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Azusa Pacific went 2-2 last week, splitting contests with Concordia and Dominican. Bella Fraser paced the offense with a 6-for-15 week...Vanguard has a busy week, going 4-2 against Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade. Brianna Williams had a shutout against Hawaii Pacific in seven innings of work, allowing only three hits while striking out 12. Lilyana Roth led the Lion offense by hitting .524 with a series cycle, six RBI and two stolen bases...Dominican's Nay Torres-Gonzalez picked up two pitching circle wins for the Penguins with a 1.75 ERA in 12 innings. Last week's Pitcher of the Week Taylor Rodriguez pitched a five-inning shutout against Jessup...Concordia's Kacie Gossett was impressive against Azusa Pacific, allowing just one earned run in seven innings with no walks during the Golden Eagles' 4-1 win. Gossett is now 9-1 on the season...Riannah Maulupe went 7-for-13 for Academy of Art against Menlo with four RBI. The freshman had four hits in the series opener...Larchele Tuifao hit two home runs and drove in five runs for Chaminade in a win over Vanguard, and had two doubles in another contest against the Lions.
