AAU's Drew Sullivan-Hames, GCU's Trevor Santor
earn PacWest awards
PHOENIX, AZ – Grand Canyon freshman OF
Trevor Santor (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood) and
Academy of Art rookie hurler Drew
Sullivan-Hames (Chico, CA/Chico Senior) have been
named the Pacific West Conference Player and
Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix,
AZ, on Monday, March 15, for games contested March 8-14.
Santor batted .533 in five starts for the Antelopes, producing a
.733 slugging mark and a .588 on base rate.
He went 8 for 15 at the plate with seven runs scored, five runs
batted in, one home run and five stolen bases. He also walked once
and reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Sullivan-Hames recorded the first save during the first win in
Urban Knight history - a 5-4 victory at Grand Canyon on March 12.
Just 24 hours later he set the school record for strikeouts in a
game with seven to earn the second victory in the short baseball
history of Academy of Art.
AAU, which launched its baseball program in 2009 with a 0-30
record, saw its losing streak extend to 43 games before
Sullivan-Hames put an end to the drought with his save.
Over the two contests in Phoenix, Sullivan-Hames posted a 2.45
earned run average during 7.1 innings of work. He allowed just two
earned runs and recorded seven strikeouts.
Sullivan-Hames started out the day in the press box filming the
game for the Urban Knights. He wound up on the mound in relief.
"Drew was in uniform that day because we are so limited in
pitching that we always have all the guys suit up,” Brian
Guinn, the head coach of the Urban Knights explained. “He was
scheduled to pitch the next day, but since this was for the first
win in program history, we wanted to give him a shot. We needed
someone to come in and throw strikes and we wanted to see if he
could do it. And you know what? He came in and got it done. That
was great. We started thinking about it a couple of innings ahead
of time so we sent someone up (to the press box) to get him."
