Dixie State Falls in NCAA Men’s Soccer West Regional First Round

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Dixie State fell to Western Washington in overtime, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer West Regional on Friday in La Jolla. The third-seeded Trailblazers lost their first NCAA postseason game, ending their year at 15-4-0.
 
Dixie State wasted little time scoring its first NCAA postseason goal. In the sixth minute, Ather Dawood put a shot on goal that bounced off the keeper and Angel Estrada scored on the rebound from the top of the box. Dixie States defense held up the remainder of the half, fending off 14 Western Washington shots. Bradley Trella made five saves and the Trailblazer defense stopped six shots, including Hunter Ketterer’s point-blank stop of a shot off a deflection by Trella.
 
Penalties hurt the Trailblazers late in the second half. A foul inside the box in the 75th minute gave Western Washington a penalty kick, and Brady Ulen scored to tie the game. Four minutes later, Dominic Damato received his second yellow card putting Dixie State down a main for the remainder of the game. A handball in the 87th minute gave Western Washington another penalty kick, and Ulen converted again for the lead.
 
With only two minutes left in regulation, Dixie State pressed hard for a chance, and Blake Damato sent a free kick into the upper left corner for the equalizer. The game went to overtime and after each team had a scoring chance, the Vikings came up with the golden goal in the 98th minute. A throw in from the right side was flicked onto the far side, and headed in by Stephen Jinneman.
