Art U, Dominican Advance in PacWest Women’s Basketball Championship

IRVINE, Calif. – Academy of Art and Dominican both won their quarterfinal matchups to advance in the PacWest Women’s Basketball Championship. No. 3 Academy of Art will face No. 2 California Baptist in the semifinals on Friday at 2:45 p.m. No. 5 Dominican meets No. 1 Azusa Pacific in the other semifinal at 7:15 p.m.

Academy of Art beat No. 6 Point Loma, 77-70, to open women’s play in the quarterfinals. Art U’s quartet of All-PacWest seniors combined for 63 points. Jasmin Guinn led the way with 25 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Zoie Sheng added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
 
PLNU’s Alex Brunk notched a double-double with 36 points and 16 rebounds, the second-best scoring output in tournament history. She shot 14-for-19 and had six assists and two steals.
 
Trailing by three midway through the second quarter, Art U went on a 20-5 run to take control, with Sha’Nice Storey making three three-pointers.
 
Dominican 66 –Hawai’i Pacific 62

Dominican topped No. 4 Hawai’i Pacific, 66-62, in the final quarterfinal game of the day. Allyssa Weatherd scored 37 points, breaking the tournament scoring record Brunk set earlier in the day and surpassing 1,000 points in her career. She made 12 field goals and 13 free throws, and completed her double-double with 14 rebounds. Ashley Sorensen had 11 rebounds and four blocks. Head coach Tim LaKose won his 400th career game.
 
Breanna McKenzie led HPU with 14 points and three steals. Aminata Cole had a game-high 17 rebounds.
