BELMONT, Calif. --
Junior Guerra scored in the 105th minute for California Baptist to defeat Notre Dame de Namur 2-1 in double overtime and clinch the PacWest title on Saturday afternoon.
Guerra took a pass from Aidan Apodaca in the second overtime and scored his sixth goal this season. The win completes an unbeaten regular season for the Lancers and gives them their first conference title since tying with Hawai`i Pacific for first place in 2011. The Lancers will go into the postseason with a 16-0-2 overall record, including 12-0-1 in conference play.
The Lancers were ranked No. 1 in each of the three NCAA West Regional rankings. The top two seeds in the West Region each host the first two rounds of the postseason. California Baptist will find out where it is seeded and who will in its half of the draw during the selection show on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Abe Placito found the back of the net with a header off a pass from
Hugo Gutierrez in the fourth minute to give the Lancers the early lead. The Lancers only needed to protect that lead to secure the conference title, but
Esteban Berumen responded with a goal in the 76th minute to tie send the game into overtime. After 14 minutes of overtime, the Lancers finally broke the tie.
Point Loma put itself in position to win the conference title wrapping up a 2-0 win over Academy of Art during the second half of California Baptist's win. The Sea Lions needed the Lancers to tie to become co-champions or lose to make Point Loma the outright champions. Point Loma finished the regular season at 14-2-2 with an 11-0-2 record in PacWest action.
The Sea Lions were ranked No. 2 in the third NCAA West Regional Rankings. They will find out if their postseason destinee on Monday.
California Baptist opened the season with a pair of dominate victories, outscoring its opponents 11-0 behind the offensive power of senior Aidan Apodaca, who scored 15 goals in the first five matches. The Lancers rattled off four consecutive wins to open conference play before having a scoreless tie against Point Loma. The Lancers went on to wrap up the regular season on an eight-match winning streak.
