Vulcans, Sea Lions Continue Women's Soccer March


Youth is served in Pacific West Conference women’s soccer as freshmen help lead their teams to victory at Point Loma and Hawai`i Hilo. The Vulcans, Sea Lions and APU Cougars remain unbeaten as PacWest teams head into their final week of non-conference action.

UH Hilo continued with their impressive early start with road wins over San Francisco State and Stanislaus State to earn Team of the Week. Freshman goalkeeper Lolo Retsky, filling in for a highly decorated teammate, is the Defender of the Week. Another rookie, Point Loma’s Zoe Crockett, scored twice in a wild 5-4 Sea Lion win over Cal State San Bernardino, earning Player of the Week honors.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Zoe Crockett, F, 5-7, Fr., Veradale, Wash.                                            
Point Loma had given up a total of two goals in three matches heading into Saturday’s tilt with Cal State San Bernardino. When the Coyotes struck for a shocking four tallies against the vaunted Sea Lion defense, Zoe Crockett and her teammates had to step it up. The freshman from eastern side of Washington scored in the 41st minute to tie the match at 3-3, and then later tallied the match winner in the 71st minute for the 5-4 win. Earlier in the week, Crockett had an assist in a 1-1 tie with Western Washington, giving her five total points for the week. The matches against the Vikings and Coyotes were the first two of the season and collegiate career for the 5-7 forward.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo’s Lolo Retsky, GK, 5-5, Fr., Calabasas, Calif.                                            
PacWest 2021 Goalkeeper of the Year and 2022 Preseason Keeper of the Year Viviana Poli is sidelined with an injury, giving freshman Lolo Retsky an opportunity to step up. The first-year player has answered the call to help lead the Vulcans to a 3-0 start. In a 1-0 win against Stanislaus State on Saturday, Retsky recorded five saves for the first shutout of her collegiate career. The southern California native has given up just two goals in three total matches.
 
VULCANS Work Around Injuries for 3-0 Start: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans. Playing without 2021 PacWest Player of the Year Dalenn Tokunaga and Goalkeeper of the Year Viviana Poli, other Vulcans had to step it up against Stanislaus State, and they did. Four-time All-PacWest defender Jodi Lillie scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick while goalkeeper Lolo Retsky had five saves in the shutout against the previously unbeaten Warriors (now 3-1-1). Earlier in the week (also on the road) against San Francisco State, Filippa Graneld scored twice and Nanea Wall added a goal for a 3-1 win over the Gators. Dating back to last season, the 2021 PacWest co-champs have won 12 of their last 13 contests.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: The PacWest went 7-6-2 overall last week against non-conference opponents, including 6-4-1 against the CCAA…The PLNU women's soccer program had not conceded multiple goals in a single game in either of the last two seasons until Saturday’s wild 5-4 win over CSUSB. They hadn’t allowed more than the three goals since top-seeded UC San Diego scored that many in the 2018 NCAA West Regional...Biola was on the wrong end of a 4-3 shootout with Cal Poly Humboldt. The Eagles Peyton Nelson scored her first two collegiate goals in the contest, and now leads Biola in scoring with five total points…Azusa Pacific tied Chico State 2-2 to remain unbeaten on the season (2-0-2). Aubrey Dunaway had two assists for the Cougars…Fresno Pacific also played to a tie, going scoreless against Cal State San Marcos. Goalkeeper Allison Marcure had three saves in the deadlock…Olivia Ocampo had a goal and a assist in Concordia's 2-0 triumph over Cal State Dominguez Hills…Dominican posted a 2-0 shutout of Cal State East Bay, with Angelina Hert saving four Pioneer shots…Azusa Pacific at Cal Poly Humboldt and Biola at Chico State were cancelled because of wildfires and smokey conditions in northern California …In the latest national soccer poll, Point Loma is listed at No. 13. The next poll will come out tomorrow (Tuesday).

LOOKING AHEAD: Hawai`i Hilo takes on RMAC opponent Regis today (Monday) in Denver…Point Loma hosts Sonoma State on Wednesday in a battle of two 2021 conference champions…Concordia hosts Division I Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday as well…On Saturday, PacWest teams play each other in non-conference matches when UH Hilo hosts Hawai`i Pacific, Holy Names welcomes Dominican and Fresno Pacific is home against Academy of Art.
