Athletic Trainer Spotlight--Dominican's Steve DeHart

March was national athletic trainer appreciation month, but we appreciate ours so much in the PacWest that we are going to extend that into April . Today let's meet Dominican's Steve DeHart (far left in photo) , who leads the charge to keep the Penguin student-athletes healthy

Athletic Trainers on college campuses all across the country treat injuries and help keep their student-athletes healthy. Over the next few weeks, let's meet those that everyone in the atheltic department depends on, a group that works countless hours serving their university.

Today, we meet Steve DeHart, who has served at Dominican since August of 2021. Prior to that, he ran his own company called DeHart Athletic Training Services and also worked at Sacramento State. A native of Novato, he worked at his former high school and still resides in Novato as well. A former football and track and field standout at Utah State and Cal Poly SLO, he once cleared 6-10 in the high jump, surely a record for Athletic Trainers everywhere.

Why did you become an Athletic Trainer? Upon leaving the traditional business world two years out of college I took a 180 degree turn and became a sports massage therapist.  After nine years of that I called the 49ers and asked how I can come work with them. Their response was to become an athletic trainer. I quickly changed directions, although not a 180 this time, enrolled in a CAAHEP program and the rest is history.  And funny enough, while in school, I did get a 2-month internship with the 49ers and hall of famer Lindsy McLean!
What do you most like about your job/career? What gets you up in the morning? The sense of being part of a team larger than myself!  Actively participating daily in sports through the athletic training room gives this lifelong sports junky his fix!  I also love experiencing the lows and highs on a daily basis that challenges today's student-athletes.
If you were not an athletic trainer, what would you be? When I was young I would have said a rock star or pro basketball player.  If I was to be part of the great resignation of ATC's and change now, I am not sure.  I love being an ATC (I'll change that to AT after licensure in CA).
What is the biggest challenge facing your profession currently?
Work/ life balance and low salaries!!!!!!  Working to much for low pay would challenge any profession.
Funniest Road Trip Moment
Had to be my crazy dancing down the aisle of the bus to the younger generations tunes after a big win!  It was quiet a sight.  Which I was reminded of instantly. Favorite Binge-Worthy Show Yellowstone

What's Your Favorite Part about Working at Your School? I feel completely supported and recognized by my administration.  And it's only 15 minutes from my home.  Dll is also nice in having the summer and a week in December off.
