Azusa Pacific and Point Loma's women's tennis teams will return to Surprise, Arizona May 19-23 for the NCAA National Tennis Championships.
The Sea Lions defeated Hawaii Pacific today in San Diego, 4-2, to earn their berth in the 16-team tournament. Azusa Pacific dispatched Fresno Pacific 4-0 to punch their ticket.
The NCAA event will be held at the Surprise Tennis and Raquet Club, the same site as the Pacific West Conference Championships last month.
The Sea Lions captured doubles on courts two and three after falling on court one. Alina Kuper/ Perla Conde Vendrell and Zoe Marley/Melissa Zirkle both won by the counts of 6-2.
In singles, it was a little more dicey for Point Loma. Kupfer won on court one 6-4, 6-3, but HPU's Kayleigh Castillo won court three (6-4, 6-3) and Tereza Ohnoutkova went three sets before edging Emely Valencia 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on court two to tie it at 2-2.
Point Loma had to go three sets to win their last two matches. Marley triumphed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 over Rosa Villar Moeller and Zirkle clinched on court six over Willow Dymkowski, 7-6, 7-6 to clinch the match.
At Azusa, the Cougars won two tight doubles matches to take the first point. Vini Bautista and Marianas Arreloa and teammates Shannel Lopez and Kimberly Tran both won by 6-4 scores.
Lopez made it 2-0 on court four this a 6-1, 6-3 victory, and Karola Suviste quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Tran wrapped up the clinch with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Azusa Pacific goes to Arizona with a 24-2 record. Point Loma is now 18-4.
