Vulcans Top Two Island Rivals While Concordia and Westmont Defenders Bag Awards

Hawai`i Hilo takes a pair from the Sharks and Silverswords in non-conference matches, while Warrior Kristian Johnson and CUI's Jonathan Moreno provide offense from their defender's position.

Hawai`i Hilo moved through the opening weekend of the 2026 men’s soccer season with a pair of non-league wins over conference rivals Chaminade and Hawai`i Pacific to earn Team of the Week. Westmont defender Kristian Johnson helped the Warriors to a 2-0 win over Simon Fraser with two goals and solid defense, while Concordia’s Jonathan Moreno scored and had two assists in a wild 3-2 win over CSU San Marcos.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans                                                                                                
Hawai`i Hilo is the Team of the Week after winning a pair of one-goal matches, topping Hawai`i Pacific at home (2-1) and Chaminade on the road (1-0). The Vulcans, tabbed to finish third in the PacWest preseason poll, won their season opener against the Sharks by scoring the game-winner in the 78th minute via Yoke Duku. Two days later in Honolulu, Kristijan Bandur scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute and the Vulcan defense took over from there for the shutout. Hilo was the only PacWest squad to go unblemished on opening weekend.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Jonathan Moreno, D, Sr., 5-10, Lakewood, Calif.                        
Concordia’s Jonathan Moreno played a major role in a wild 3-2 win over CSU San Marcos on Saturday night in Irvine. Moreno scored the first goal of the match after a rebound came to him off a shot by teammate Marcus Ozmai. He later assisted on Concordia's next two goals, including a cross for the game-winner scored by Andy Jun in the 85th minute. The fourth-year Golden Eagle, despite being a defender, now has seven assists in his career and two goals.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Westmont’s Kristian Johnson, D, Sr., 5-10, Redlands, Calif.                    
Westmont’s Kristian Johnson had just two shots but they were both difference makers during a 2-0 Warrior win over Simon Fraser on the road in British Columbia. Both scores came off of set plays for the senior defender, who scored just two goals in all of 2025. Johnson also played a major role for the Warrior defense, who allowed just one goal over two matches as Westmont split their openers, which included a tight 1-0 loss to St. Martin’s.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Westmont’s Aidan Strickler patrolled the goal in the shutout against Simon Fraser with six saves. He had 11 total saves on the weekend and allowed just one goal…PacWest preseason favorite Point Loma opened 2026 with a 2-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona and a 1-1 tie with CSU San Bernardino. The Broncos are picked to finish third in the CCAA preseason poll…Dominican had 21 total shots during a wild comeback that fell just short in a 4-3 loss to CSU Monterey Bay. The Penguins scored twice in the last 22 minutes but came up one goal short against the Otters.

LOOKING AHEAD: 19 non-conference matches are on the slate this week, featuring a trip to Washington for Point Loma and Westmont, where they will battle two of the top teams in the GNAC in Western Washington and Seattle Pacific.
