Point Loma Cools Off the Otters

The Sea Lions knock off previously unbeaten CSU Monterey Bay. VU's Alcantar scores twice in 3-2 win and Hilo's Teicher has 11 saves against a pair of nationally ranked teams.

Point Loma handed CSU Monterey Bay their first loss of the season and tied CSU Dominguez Hills to earn Team of the Week. Vanguard’s Xavier Alcantar scored twice in the Lions’ 3-2 win over CSU East Bay and Hilo’s Tim Teicher totaled 11 saves during a great defensive effort against two nationally ranked teams in Colorado.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                   
Point Loma is the Team of the Week after an impressive win over CSU Monterey Bay, 4-2. Four different Sea Lions scored against the Otters as the home team overcame a 1-0 deficit with three first half goals in the win. CSU Monterey Bay came into the match with a 4-0 record. Point Loma also tied CSU Dominguez Hills (1-1) under the lights in Carson, courtesy of Jack Merrill’s penalty kick in the 90th minute. Point Loma, the defending conference champion, is now 2-2-2 in non-league play.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Vanguard’s Xavier Alcantar, MF, Fr., 5-6, Glendora, Calif.                                     
Vanguard’s Xavier Alcantar picked a perfect time to pocket his first two career goals to help lead the Lions to a 3-2 win over CSU East Bay. The redshirt freshman scored in the fourth and 82nd minutes to help push his team to their first victory of the season, with the latter goal tying the match. Alcantar, a transfer from UNC-Ashville, has started in all six contests for Vanguard this season.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo’s Tim Teicher, GK, Jr., 6-0, Ingolstadt, Germany                            
Hawai`i Hilo’s Tim Teicher had a tall task against two nationally ranked teams on the road as the Vulcans took on No. 4 UC Colorado Springs and No. 22 CSU-Pueblo. Teicher had six saves in the 1-0 loss to the Thunderwolves and had five against the Mountain Lions in a 2-1 setback. Teicher, a junior transfer from Coastal Bend College (Texas), was making just his second and third starts of the season in goal.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Three PacWest teams went 1-1 last week. Concordia defeated Fresno Pacific (3-2) but lost to CSU San Bernardino, 2-1. Andy Jun had the game-winning goal against the Sunbirds and had an assist against the Coyotes. Westmont topped CSU East Bay (3-2) but fell to No. 8 ranked CSU Los Angeles (1-0). Vanguard edged East Bay 3-2 and lost to CSU Monterey Bay (1-0)…Hawaii Pacific’s Kelly Takara scored twice during the Sharks’ 3-3 tie with Stanislaus State…Chaminade’s Vlad Tomoutiu popped two balls into the net during a 4-2 loss to St. Martin’s....Hawai`i Hilo was ranked fifth in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association West Region poll.
