Silverswords Survive Stanislaus Scare for Win

Chaminade goes extra time to win the first two sets, then settle in for 3-0 win. 'Swords advance to NCAA West Regional semifinals to face Gators or Golden Eagles.

POMONA, Calif.--A slow start didn't detour No. 3 seed Chaminade as the Silverswords righted the ship for a 26-24, 27-25, 25-11 NCAA West Region quarterfinals victory over No. 6 seed Stanislaus State on Thursday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.

Chaminade, now 28-4, advances to Friday's semifinals to face the winner of tonight's match between No. 2 seed San Francisco State and No. 7 CSU Los Angeles.

The Pacific West Conference now has a semifinal contestant on each side of the bracket, with Point Loma having won earlier today (3-2) over Central Washington.

Chaminade's semifinal berth was anything but certain earlier in the day. The Warriors roared out to a 13-6 lead in the first set and stretched that margin to 17-9. The CCAA tournament champion also led at 19-11, 20-12 and 21-13 before the Silverswords scored six straight points to climb back into contention. Still, the PacWest champ trailed 23-20 and 24-22 before a final push.

Anna Stucchi had two kills and setter Grace Talpash added another to help reverse the deficit for a 26-24 win.

The second set had a different flavor with Chaminade taking a 16-12 lead and a 17-14 margin. But the Warriors mounted their own rally to tie it at 17-17. Stanislaus State eventually took a 24-23 lead, but this time the 'Swords stormed back. Two consecutive putaways by Mahala Ka`apuni, followed by a kill delivered by Malena Mihalik and a SSU service gave CUH the win, 27-25.

Chaminade jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set and never trailed after that. They would hit .367 in the game to put away the Warrior hopes and end their season at 22-8.

The Silverswords had their typical balanced attack, led by Ka`apuni's 12 kills and three service aces. She hit .360 in the match. Talpash had 32 assists, Nanna Inoue had 14 digs and Letizia Cammillucci was just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs.

CUH would hit .307 for the match and delivered nine service aces.
