Cougars, Roadrunners and Urban Knights Win PacWest Women's Tennis Awards

SURPRISE, Ariz.--Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren and his lead player Madison Kane received the top two Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis awards for 2024, presented at the conference tournament on Wednesday evening.

Bohren's squad is 18-1 on the season and has won 17 straight matches. They are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will open tomorrow in the Quarterfinals against No. 7 Hawai`i Hilo.

The Newcomer of the Year, also voted on by the coaches, is MSU Denver's Emily Hafner and the Freshman of the Year is Academy of Art's Amelija Supulniece.

Mark Bohren, who was also named the Coach of the Year for the mean, saw his team fall very early in the season to Point Loma by the scant edge of 4-3. That was on February 10 and they haven't lost since. The Cougars are ranked No. 19 in the latest ITA national rankings and they are the top rated team in the West Region. Bohren, in his 27th year of coaching the APU women, is now 434-188 in his career on the women's side.

Madison Kane has played on court one in both singles and doubles for the Cougars. The 5-foot-10 senior is 16-2 in singles play and 14-2 in doubles heading into the PacWest tournament. The Pasadena native is now a three-time First Team All-PacWest selection in singles and and is a four-time pick in doubles. Kane is ranked tenth nationally in singles and with Miruna Tudor is ranked third on the ITA national list.

Emily Hafner transferred to MSU Denver after playing four successful seasons at Montevallo (Ala.). For the Roadrunners, she was 10-7 in singles play this season on court one and the German was 13-7 on courts one and two in doubles. Hafner is ranked 19th nationally in singles play.

Amelija Supulniece of Academy of Art is the Freshman of the Year. The rookie from Latvia played every match this season on court one in singles and in doubles. In singles she was 10-4 and is 7-3 in doubles heading into the conference tournament.

Kane is also a First Team selection in singles and doubles, Hafner is Second Team in singles and Supulniece is First Team in singles and second team in doubles. Biola's Colbeyshae Emery, a First Team selection in 2024, is now a four-time All-PacWest pick. Dominican's Audrey Rafols (Second Team) was selected for the third season in both singles and doubles, like her partner Gina Dudley. Point Loma senior Arianna Audello (Third Team) was named to the All-PacWest singles team for the third time.
