SURPRISE, Ariz.--The top four seeds all advanced on the first day of the 2024 Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday morning at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
In today's First Round bouts matching the 5-12 seeds, Biola, Academy of Art, Hawai`i Hilo and Dominican all advanced into Thursday's Quarterfinals.

Stanislaus State, who was one of the only 12 seeds to win a First Round match in the history of the conference tournament in 2023, won't have the same cinderella run in 2024. Biola was the first squad to win on Wednesday morning, topping the Warriors 4-1. Biola tandems Alex Mann and Brooke Fager clinched the doubles point afer Colbeyshae Emery and Lilly McNeill had won, 6-0. With one team point in the books, Biola picked up three other points on the singles courts with Emery (6-0, 6-2) on court one, McNeill (6-0, 6-2) on court two and Mann (6-3, 6-0) on court five. The Eagles will play #3 seed Concordia on Thursday in the Quarterfinals at 1 pm.

The Urban Knights advanced to the Quarterfinals with a sweep of the Mavericks. The doubles points came courtesty of Jessica Plazas and Erica Hellbe (6-0) on court two in a rapid one, with the clincher coming in a much different fashion. On court three, Paulina Alvarez and Viktoria Leth won a marathon over Kristen Thomas and Delia Maier of CMU, 7-6 (11-9). That was the biggest fight of the day, with the Urban Knights making quicker work of the Mavericks in singles. Amelija Supulniece won on court one 6-1, 6-0. Plazas won on court two (6-3, 6-2) and Leth captured victory on court five, 6-3, 6-0.

In a battle matching the closest seeds, the Penguins took a 4-0 victory over the Roadrunners. Audrey Rafols and Gina Dudley won court one in doubles (6-4), and Maria Gavrilov and Hailey Garcia did the same on court three, 6-2. In singles, Astrid Craig made it 2-0 on court six (6-2, 6-2), and Carolina Guerrero made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. On court one, two of the top players in the conference squared off with Rafols outlasting MSUD's Emily Hafner, 6-4, 6-3. The Penguins will now play No. 1 seed Point Loma on Thursday at 1 pm.
HAWAI`I HILO 4, FRESNO PACIFIC 3
In the longest match of the morning, the Vulcans outlasted the Sunbirds in two hours and 34 minutes. It all came down to court five, where UH Hilo's Hana Hofmanova won a morning-to-afternoon match over Daimy Paula, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. Earlier, FPU had won the doubles point with Paula and Haile Faherty capturing court one (6-1), with Audrey Ouellet and Malia Mitchell rallying for a 7-5 win over Hilo's Julia Barden and Sateho Turiumi. Moving to singles, Nayuma Subba won 6-0, 6-1 on court one to make it 2-0 Sunbirds, but Hilo's Turiumi won on court four (6-2, 6-0) to make it 2-1. Barden then tied it on court six (6-2, 6-0), followed by Hikari Osaki's Vulcan victory on court three (6-1, 6-2). FPU's Yumi Ueoku tied it on court two (6-2, 6-4), leaving the marathon of Paula and Hofmanova. The Vulcans now advance to play #2 Azusa Pacific.
