TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dominican's Wakilli Bennett, Sprints, Gr., Sacramento, Calif.
Dominican's Wakilli Bennett sped past a Division I field in not one, but two sprint events last week at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at UC Berkeley. The third-year Penguin clocked 10.25 in the 100 meters and 20.90 in the 200, posting the seventh and eighth fastest marks thus far in Division II. Additionally, the Sacramento native beat a mostly Pac-12 field in winning the two races and both times were collegiate bests for him. Bennett placed second in last year's PacWest Championships in the 100 with a time of 10.42.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art's Yacouba Gnacko, Jumps, Jr., Paris, France
Academy of Art's Yacouba Gnacko won the Field Athlete of the Week for the third consecutive time, this week for his work in the long jump. Gnacko went 24-9 and three quarters to place second at California-Berkeley with the eighth best Division II leap this year. That is the fourth longest jump in Academy of Art history and the best leap of his career. Gnacko, who went 51-7 in the triple jump the week previous at the Texas Relays, placed fifth in that event at the 2024 Indoor National Championships and has won the last two PacWest outdoor championships in the hop, skip and jump.
LOOKING AHEAD: PacWest teams will be competing at four different meets this coming week, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday--the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, the Long Beach Invitational, a meet at San Francisco State and a event at CS Los Angeles.
PacWest Championships: The 2024 conference meet will be hosted by Westmont in Santa Barbara this year, April 26-27. Azusa Pacific will be chasing their eighth consecutive team titles for both men and women.
