'Swords Make National Statement in Colorado

Chaminade rolled a pair of top ranked teams, paced by Anna Stucchi who is the Player of the Week. Azusa Pacific's Mia Medrano dug up balls all week for Defender of the Week honors.

In a span of a week, Chaminade has beaten the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams in the country. This past week at the Colorado Premier, they bested No. 2 Wayne State and No. 3 MSU Denver, paced by 52 total kills from transfer Anna Stucchi. APU's Mia Medrano dug up 37 balls against Western Oregon and had 77 for the week to earn Defender of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chaminade's Anna Stucchi, MB, Sr., 5-11, Roncello, Italy                                                
Chaminade's Anna Stucchi hit and blocked her way to a big week in Denver. The senior transfer from Santa Clara had 20 kills with four blocks in a win over No. 3 ranked host MSU Denver, and added 16 more kills in a three-set sweep of Wheeling (West Virginia). The Italian had 52 total kills in Colorado (3.5 per set) and 11 total blocks. She also hit .450 for the week, and was named to the Colorado Premier Challenge All-Tournament team. 

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific's Mia Mendrano, DS, Soph., 5-5, Chino, Calif.                                        
Azusa Pacific's Mia Mendrano kept a lot of balls in play last week for her new squad. The CS Dominguez Hills transfer had 77 total digs in three matches and 12 sets, for an average of 6.4 digs per set. She had 37 digs in a five-set brawl with Western Oregon, by far the season best in the PacWest this year. Mendrano also had 22 digs in a three-set win over CS San Marcos to help the Cougars go 2-1 on the week. Through two weeks of play, Medrano leads the PacWest with 4.84 digs per set.
 
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Chaminade Silverswords                                                                                                            
The PacWest Team of the Week is Chaminade, who won three matches and reached the championship of the Colorado Premier Classic in Denver. The Silverswords, who topped No. 1 nationally ranked and defending national champ CS Los Angeles the week before, made it a trifecta of the top three ranked teams while in Colorado. The 'Swords swept No. 2 Wayne State (Mich.), went 3-0 versus Wheeling (WV) and went four sets to top host and No. 3 ranked MSU Denver. Coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke's team finally ran out of magic in the championship match, falling in five sets to No. 9 West Texas A&M. Now at 7-3 on the season, the Silverswords had won five straight matches before the loss to the Lady Buffs.

'SWORDS SHAKE UP NATIONAL RANKINGS: The latest AVCA national volleyball rankings just came out (Monday afternoon) and the results in Colorado had a lot to do with shaking things up a bit. MSU Denver, whom Chaminade defeated, moved up to No. 2 on the list, and tournament winner West Texas A&M jumped from No. 9 to No. 3. The Silverswords went from 12 to No. 7. Point Loma goes from Receiving Votes to No. 25. Previous No. 1 CS Los Angeles is now 14th, with fellow CCAA schools Cal Poly Pomona at 13 and CS San Bernardino at 19.     

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma moved to 6-0 on the season with three more wins last weekend in Idaho. The Sea Lions swept Colorado Mines and Saint Martin's and went four sets in defeating host Northwest Nazarene. Setter Sophia Baugh directed the offense with 110 assists in the 10 three wins, an average of 11 assists per set. She had a career high 45 assists against NNU...Jessup went 3-0 at Stanislaus State's tournament, defeating the hosts, UC Merced and Chico State. The Oaks have now won four in a row (4-3). Madalyn Miller had 44 kills in the three matches and hit .237...Westmont went 2-1 at CS San Marcos, beating the host Cougars and CS Monterey Bay...Madison Moore had 48 kills and 32 digs in Idaho for Biola...Hannah Torres had 48 kills and hit .226 for Menlo in three matches at the Stanislaus State tournament...Delaney Tate had a big weekend for Azusa Pacific as the Cougars won two of three in San Marcos. Tate averaged 4.7 kills per set and had 50 total digs. She put down 22 balls and hit .306 in a four-set win over CS Monterey Bay

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: Pacific West Conference play officially begins this week with 13 matches running Thursday through Saturday. Newcomer Menlo will head to the islands, while defending conference champ Point Loma will travel to Concordia on Thursday and Westmont on Saturday. Domincan and Academy of Art will also kick off the 2024 conference season in Hawai`i while Fresno Pacific travels to Biola and Concordia, Azusa Pacific goes to Vanguard and hosts Jessup.
