Sunbirds Roll to 3-0 Victory over Vikings

Fresno Pacific defeats Western Washington in the opening round of the NCAA West Region Championships and will now advance to Friday's Semifinals.

SAN DIEGO—As far as victories for Fresno Pacific, during a season in which they how have 26 of them, this one was fairly typical.

Except it came in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA West Region tournament.

The Sunbirds rolled to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 victory over Western Washington on Thursday morning at Golden Gymnasium. FPU improved to 26-1 by hitting .361 with just nine attack errors, 48 assists and six service aces.

The Pacific West Conference co-champions now advance to Friday’s semifinals to take on the winner of today’s 1:30 match between Central Washington and Simon Fraser.

Fresno Pacific’s typically balanced attack included Cambria Waites 14 kills on .545 hitting percentage, ten kills from Makayla Smith, eight from Madelyn Feramisco and seven via Itzel Aguayo. Devyn Castaneda had four aces and Mikayla Weiss had four block assists.

The Sunbirds trailed by just one point a couple of times in the entire match. They hit .361 in the first set with 17 assists, hit .333 in the second with only two attack errors and pulled away in the third after building an early 11-6 lead for a final 25-15 verdict.

Western Washington’s season ends at 19-7. The Vikings were led by Delaney Speer’s 10 kills.
