PLNU Knocks out Nanooks in Four Sets

It will be an All-PacWest final on Saturday night at 7 pm when Point Loma faces Fresno Pacific. It's the third time in three weeks that the two have played for a trophy.

SAN DIEGO—For the third time in three weeks, Point Loma will face Fresno Pacific with a trophy on the line.

This time it will be for the NCAA West Region Championship on Saturday night at 7 p.m., after the Sea Lions took down the University of Alaska in four sets on Friday night in Golden Gym in the regional semifinals.

Point Loma topped the Nanooks 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18 to advance to an All-Pacific West Conference final. Fresno Pacific advanced earlier in the day with a five-set victory over Central Washington.

The Sea Lions and Sunbirds met on Nov. 15 in San Diego for the PacWest regular season title (PLNU won in five sets), again on Nov. 22 in Honolulu for the PacWest tournament crown (FPU won in five) and now on Dec. 6 for the regional trophy and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Point Loma will bring a 26-4 record into the match while Fresno Pacific is 27-1. This marks the first time since 1998 that two PacWest teams have met in the west region final. That year, Hawaii Pacific defeated BYU Hawaii in five sets.

Tonight, the Sea Lions topped a Nanooks team that had reached the semifinals by defeating rival Alaska Anchorage last night in a quick three sets.

In the first set, PLNU came back from a 20-17 deficit to score eight of the final nine points for a 25-21 win. In the second set, the Sea Lions led from start to finish for a 25-20 margin.

But Alaska came back in the third, leading the entire way for a 25-20 triumph to stay alive. In the fourth set, Point Loma pulled away from a 9-9 tie with six straight points and they would never trail again on their way to a 25-18 victory.

Abigail Nua led Point Loma with 16 kills and Kyra Miles added 12. Macy Reynolds had 18 digs. Mikala Henderson led the Nanooks with 20 kills.

This will be the first-ever NCAA regional final for both Point Loma and Fresno Pacific.
