Road To San Rafael: Women’s Tournament Field Nearly Set

Five of the six PacWest Women’s Basketball Championship participants are set after Fresno Pacific claimed a berth Tuesday

The PacWest Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are headed to Dominican University’s Conlan Center in San Rafael March 6-8, where the six women’s teams and six men’s teams will battle for the PacWest Conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division II regional championships.

Five of the six PacWest Women’s Basketball Championship participants are set after Fresno Pacific claimed a berth with Tuesday night’s win over Hawai'i Pacific, joining Point Loma, Azusa Pacific, Dominican, and Westmont in the 6-team tournament field with 11 days left in the regular season.

The battle at the top continues to tighten, as 5 teams are in contention for the regular-season title. The final 2 weeks of the schedule bring a handful of impactful head-to-head matchups that will help decide the race, starting when conference-leading Point Loma takes on defending champion Azusa Pacific Wednesday night in Azusa.

First-year PacWest member Vanguard (13-3, 15-7) sits just behind the leaders, and Dominican (13-4, 19-9) and Westmont (12-5, 16-8) also remain within reach of the top of the standings down the stretch.

Who’s In:

Point Loma (14-2 PacWest, 19-5 overall): PLNU brings a 5-game winning streak into its Wednesday visit to Azusa Pacific, but the Sea Lions’ closing stretch also includes matchups with three more opponents in the top-six of the conference standings.

Azusa Pacific (14-3 PacWest, 20-9 overall): The Cougars bounced back from their loss to Vanguard with an impressive 85-68 win over Westmont. After Azusa Pacific hosts Point Loma Wednesday, the remaining schedule includes 2 more home games against Biola and Academy of Art.

Dominican (13-4 PacWest, 19-9 overall): The 2025 PacWest Championship host is making a run at one of the top seeds, reeling off 8 consecutive wins (and 13 of 14) to pull within reach of a top-two finish in the regular season standings. The Penguins host Hawai'i Hilo Wednesday before visiting Vanguard and Concordia to close out the regular season next week.

Westmont (12-5 PacWest, 16-8 overall): Only 3 games removed from a 10-game winning streak, Westmont got back on the winning track after defeats to Point Loma and Azusa Pacific with a 61-56 road win over Academy of Art on Feb. 15. The Warriors still have a shot at a top-two seed in the PacWest Tournament, but the final schedule includes tough matchups against Vanguard, Biola, and Point Loma.

Fresno Pacific (9-10 PacWest, 13-13 overall): The Sunbirds claimed their PacWest Tournament berth in dramatic fashion, holding off Hawai'i Pacific for a 50-46 victory Tuesday night. FPU’s only remaining game in the conference schedule is a visit to Jessup on March 1.

Sixth Spot Up For Grabs:
Biola (7-11, 7-19) is currently in line for the final spot in the 6-team tournament field, and the Eagles would secure it with either one more victory in its final 2 games against PacWest title contenders Westmont and Azusa Pacific, or with 1 more loss from each of the following teams (Hawai'i Pacific, Academy of Art, Hawai'i Hilo, Concordia) who are all still in contention for that final spot in the tournament.

If The Season Ended Today:
#1 seed: Point Loma
#2 seed: Azusa Pacific
#3 seed: Dominican
#4 seed: Westmont
#5 seed: Fresno Pacific (head-to-head tiebreaker win over Biola)
#6 seed: Biola

Impact Matchups:
Wednesday, Feb. 19: Point Loma at Azusa Pacific
The first of several head-to-head matchups among PacWest regular-season title contenders features the current leader (Point Loma) taking on the defending champion (Azusa Pacific). PLNU won the first matchup between the teams, 66-64, on Jan. 29, and the Sea Lions visit APU for the rematch Wednesday night.

Wednesday, Feb. 19: Vanguard at Westmont
Another Wednesday matchup also features PacWest title contenders, as first-year member Vanguard takes on second-year member Westmont, which posted a 59-56 road win over the Lions on Feb. 5.

Thursday, Feb. 20: Hawai'i Pacific at Academy of Art
This Thursday night matchup wraps up a 4-game Northern California road trip for HPU, and it’s a true elimination game for both teams, as the winner stays alive for a PacWest Tournament berth while the loser is eliminated from tournament contention.

Saturday, Feb. 22: Vanguard at Point Loma
Both teams have to regroup from challenging Wednesday matchups to resume the chase for the PacWest regular-season title. Vanguard won the first meeting between the teams, 60-50, and the first-year PacWest member Lions have won all 3 of their matchups against the current PacWest leaders (Point Loma, Azusa Pacific).

Saturday, Feb. 22: Westmont at Biola
Biola needs 1 more win to reach the PacWest Tournament, and the path starts with a matchup at home against a PacWest title contender in Westmont. The Warriors, who posted a 70-49 win at home over the Eagles in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 29, are in their first season of NCAA postseason eligibility.
