Cougars Tip Top Two, ART U's Supulniece Wins Big Match

Azusa Pacific continues roll with victories over Point Loma and Concordia. Urban Knight ace earns Player of the Week, avenging her only other loss of the season.

Azusa Pacific ended Point Loma's run of Team of the Week, partially by beating the Sea Lions along with Concordia. Academy of Art's Amelija Supulniece avenged her only Division II defeat of the season with a dominent win on court one.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art's Amelija Supulniece, Soph., 5-9, Riga, Latvia                    
Academy of Art's Amelija Supulniece won a match between two of the top players in the Pacific West Conference with a impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Dominican's Audrey Rafols. That meant a measure of revenge for the 2024 PacWest Freshman of the Year, who had lost to Rafols back on February 17, 6-2, 6-4. Supulniece also teamed with doubles partner Estelle Najean for a 6-4 win over Rafols and Sofia Acuna. Supulniece is on a roll, having won nine straight singles matches, all in straight sets, to improve to 11-2 on the season. Her last loss was to a Division I player from Nevada. She is also 10-1 in doubles play. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars                                                                                        
Azusa Pacific held serve against the top two teams in the conference. The Cougars defeated the No. 2 and 3 teams in the PacWest rankings leading up to the PacWest Championships, virtually guaranteeing the No. 1 seed in Surprise. They won against both No. 13 Point Loma and Concordia by the same score, 4-3. The Cougars were down to just five players against the Golden Eagles, but freshman Tina Moser came through in a three-hour battle with her fellow Swiss Alicia De Re, beating the senior after saving a match point. Back at full strength against Point Loma, which is ranked higher in the ITA rankings, the Cougars pulled out a 4-3 win despite two retirements as Stina Larsson clinched the victory by winning five games in a row at No. 2 singles. Azusa Pacific has now won 15-consecutive matches against PacWest teams, while Larsson and Karola Suviste became the PacWest leaders in doubles wins this season with 13.

THE ROAD TO THE DESERT: The field for the 2025 Pacific West Conference Championship is set. This selection committee  released the list on Monday, which determined the top 12 teams that will compete in Suprise, Arizona, April 16-19. The seeding is currently the following, although the committee will meet will final time next Saturday to take this week's results into consideration. (1) Azusa Pacific, (2) Point Loma, (3) Concordia, (4) Dominican, (5) Hawaii Pacific, (6) Biola, (7) Colorado Mesa, (8) MSU-Denver, (9) Stanislaus Stae, (10) Hawaii Hilo, (11) Academy of Art, (12) Fresno Pacific. To see the complete ranking, click here.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Dominican won the above mentioned match with Academy of Art, 5-2. Coupled with a win last week over Menlo, that moved the Penguins mark against PacWest schools to 13-1...Colorado Mesa went 3-0 last week with wins over MSU-Denver, Colorado College and Colorado State-Pueblo. It was the Mavericks' 43rd straight win over the Roadrunners, and bumped CMU's record to 6-2 against PacWest teams...Hawaii Pacific won a pair of matches against Hawaii Hilo on the Big Island, both by 4-0 scores...CSU Los Angeles won an exciting 4-3 match against Westmont, with the clinching point coming on court six where Courtlyn Lam edged Sabina Salva in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

THIS WEEK: The final matches of the regular season are on tap this week. The following matches have the potential to alter the final seedings, which will be determined on Saturday night after the completion of play. Today, Fresno Pacific travels to Biola, and on Wednesday the Sunbirds play at Azusa Pacific. Hawaii Hilo is at Menlo on Thursday, Azusa Pacific is at CSU Los Angeles, and Friday's slate includes Colorado Mesa at MSU-Denver, Westmont at Biola and Stanislaus State is at Academy of Art.
