Point Loma and
Dominican, winners of the last eight Pacific West Conference Academic Achievement Awards, will make it nine straight in 2024-25 by sharing the prestigious honor.
The Penguins and Sea Lions both had a 3.52 overall grade point average, taking into account all of their men's and women's teams that play within the PacWest footprint of 15 sports.
Point Loma, the winner in 2022-23 and 2023-24, equaled their winning total of 3.52 from last year. That equals the third highest overall athletic department average in PacWest history. Their 2023 tally of 3.55 is second all-time, while Dominican's 3.62 mark in 2020-21 is the highest in conference history.
The award was first handed out in 2008. Dominican remains the all-time leader by a large margin with 12 Academic Achievement awards. Point Loma now has four, the only PacWest institution other than BYU Hawaii (two) to win more than one.
The results take into account every student-athlete's cummulative grade point average for the team and sport that they competed in 2024-25.
Just behind Point Loma and Dominican in overall GPA was
Biola (3.51),
Vanguard (3.44),
Azusa Pacific (3.42),
Menlo (3.41) and
Chaminade (3.40).
Gender specific,
Point Loma had the top GPA for women's sports at 3.63, followed very closely by
Dominican (3.60),
Vanguard (3.54),
Biola (3.53),
Azusa Pacific (3.52) and
Chaminade (3.50). For overall men,
Biola led at 3.48 with
Menlo next (3.44), followed by
Dominican and
Vanguard (3.39),
Point Loma (3.38), and
Azusa Pacific (3.35).
The
Point Loma men's tennis team had the highest overall GPA of any men's team (3.86) and the Sea Lion women's tennis squad had the top female team GPA at 3.77. Eight different schools captured team GPA titles
