Hawaii Pacific’s Evi Roobol went 4-0 against PacWest opponents Biola and Dominican to earn Player of the Week honors. The sophomore, who played No. 1 for the Sharks last year as well, teamed with
Annika Hakovirta to win on court one against Biola, 6-0 and then fought through a tough opponent in BU’s
Ivet Stancheva, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to help secure the 6-1 team win. In a 4-3 victory over Dominican, the Belgium native teamed again with Hakovirta to win 6-0 in doubles and then provided a 4-1 team lead with her singles triumph over DUC’s
Sofia Acuna, 6-4, 6-3.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific Sharks
Hawaii Pacific picked up two big wins in head-to-head matches against Biola and Dominican on Oahu last week. In the tight match against the Penguins, the Sharks won the doubles point and then earned wins on court one (
Evi Roobol), court two (
Tereza Noah) and court five (
Rosa Viller Moeller). HPU had a 4-1 lead before the Penguins won three-set matches on courts six and four for the final 4-3 score. The match against the Eagles was closer than the 6-1 score would indicate, with Roobol and
Willow Dymkowski both needing three sets to win.
Annika Hakovirta also had a tight match on court four with
Isabella Karam, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). HPU is now 2-2, but the two losses were to Division I teams CSU Fullerton and Sacramento State.
ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 15 in the January 14 ITA national poll, with
Point Loma listed at No. 17. The next list arrives on February 18.
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Fresno Pacific held on for a 4-3 win over Stanislaus State, with
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku winning on courts one and two and also teaming to win at No. 1 doubles. FPU is now 2-0…It was a short schedule last week with some matches cancelled because of weather. Matches that were played included 7-0 wins for
Dominican over Chaminade,
Hawaii Hilo over Chaminade,
Point Loma over Westmont and
Azusa Pacific over CSU Los Angeles. Biola’s matches against Dominican and Hawaii Hilo were started but not completed.
THIS WEEK: More big matches are on tap in Hawaii this week, beginning with today’s (Tuesday) bout between Hawaii Hilo and Dominican. Azusa Pacific also travels to Hawaii later in the week and will take on Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo. The Sharks and Vulcans will also play each other on Sunday. To see the complete schedule,
