Point Loma's Alina Kupfer Wins ITA Singles Title

Kupfer defeats Fresno Pacific's Fabiana Gonzales in the finals. Azusa Pacific's duo wins doubles crown over Sea Lion pair.

LA MIRADA, Calif.--Point Loma's Alina Kupfer didn't drop a set through six matches to capture the 2025 ITA Division II West Regional Singles Championship, Sept. 25-27 at Biola University.

Kupfer took out freshman Fabiana Gonzalez of Fresno Pacific in the finals, 6-3, 7-5 to cap three days of tennis where a massive field of 64 players competed for the right to advance to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia. It will be Kupfer, a senior, who make that trip to represent the NCAA West Region, October 16-19.

Kupfer, who played No. 1 and 2 last year at Point Loma after transferring from Southern New Hampshire (10-11 singles record), defeated Devyn Rodriguez of Colorado Mesa in the semifinals (7-5, 6-1) before edging Gonzalez in the title match. Gonzalez, a true freshman from Riverton, Utah, won five straight matches in her collegiate debut, including a marathon win over Point Loma's Anna Pallencaoe in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. Prior to falling to Kupfer, Gonzalez's only set loss was to Pallencaoe, who was the 2025 PacWest Championships MVP for the title winning Sea Lions.

In doubles play, Azusa Pacific's Karola Suviste and Stina Larsson slipped by Dominican's Sofia Acuna and Kaylee Lopez in the semifinals, 8-7 (7-1) and then topped Pallencaoe and Emely Valencia in the finals, 6-3, 6-0. The No. 4 seeded Cougar duo had to survive a 8-7 (8-6) scare in the Round of 32 against Dafne Andres Paton and Ivet Stancheva of Biola to advance all the way to the finals. In the semi's, Pallencaoe and Valencia defeated Colorado Mesa's Catalina Ballow and Delia Maier, 8-1.

Larsson, the 2025 PacWest Freshman of the Year and Suviste (both sophomores) will advance to Rome to play for the ITA Cup title.

It was an impressive showing for the unseeded Dominican team to reach the semifinals, featuring a sophomore (Acuna) and a freshman (Lopez), playing in her first collegiate event. Lopez is from Fontana, Calif. and Acuna (Oklahoma City) played at mostly No. 4 singles for the Penguins as a freshman and each of the three doubles spots.
