Biola's Big Wins Leads to Awards

The Eagles captured early season victories over Point Loma and Hawaii Pacific to improve to 5-0.

It’s only February, but Biola recorded two very large wins in the big picture of the PacWest seedings. The Eagles took down Point Loma and Hawaii Pacific, and Alejandro Flores Monteverde played a big role with a pair of three-set wins on court two. It was Biola's first-ever win over Hawaii Pacific.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Biola’s Alejandro Flores Monteverde, Jr., 5-9, Mexicali, Mexico                                            
Veteran player Alejandro Flores Monteverde recorded a pair of comeback three-set victories for the Eagles on court two during huge team wins over Hawaii Pacific and Point Loma. On Oahu, Biola topped Hawaii Pacific 4-3 and the Mexicali native clinched the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Ethan Terry. Back home in La Mirada on Saturday, Flores rallied back again from a first set deficit with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Point Loma’s David Fisinger. He also picked up a doubles victory (and a no decision) for a 3-0 week. The junior was a First Team All-PacWest singles and doubles pick in 2025.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles                                                                                                                                    
Biola is off to a 5-0 start with wins in the last ten days over Hawaii Pacific (4-3), Point Loma (6-1) and Whittier (7-0). Against the Sharks on Oahu, the Eagles dropped the doubles point but roared back with singles wins on courts one, two, four and six. Angel Guerrero Melgar beat Mile Matic on court one (7-5, 6-3), Pol Masafret Hernandez won a tough match at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) and Juan Vallejo won at No. 6. Alejandro Flores Monteverde clinched the match on court two (see above). It was Biola's first-ever victory against the Sharks. Against the Sea Lions, who swept the Eagles in 2025, Biola rolled to the 6-1 win by winning the doubles point and captured singles victories from Melgar, Flores, Adam Large on court three and Vallejo at No. 4. BU also topped Whittier on Monday for their fifth straight victory.

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 11 in the February 18 ITA national poll, with the next listing scheduled for February 25.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawaii Hilo won a rematch versus Hawaii Pacific, 5-2. The Sharks won the first two times that they played this season by identical 4-3 scores. This time, the Vulcans won the doubles point and captured singles victories on courts one, two and five. The longest bout took place on court six with Hilo’s Iori Furuhata topping Rene Gabriel Jung, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2)…Azusa Pacific improved to 4-0 outdoors with a 5-2 win over No. 15 nationally ranked (D3) Pomona-Pitzer. Over Valentine’s weekend the Cougars competed at the ITA Indoor National Championships, falling to Flager (4-1), Texas-Tyler (4-3) and Indianapolis (4-3)…Point Loma defeated Westmont, 6-1…Menlo topped Jessup 7-0…Westmont beat Menlo 4-3 in a tight one, where three of the six singles matches went three sets…Fresno Pacific took down Jessup, 5-2…A very interesting match was cancelled due to weather--Biola vs. Hawaii Hilo on Oahu.

THIS WEEK: On Wednesday, Westmont is at Chapman, while Thursday features a huge match between Biola and Azusa Pacific. Also on Thursday, Point Loma welcomes Pomona-Pitzer and Menlo travels to UC Santa Cruz. APU is at Redlands on Friday and on Saturday, Biola travels to Westmont and Stanton is at Azusa.
