PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Menlo’s Zofia Dziewiecka, Jr., Warsaw, Poland
Menlo’s Zofia Dziewiecka posted a perfect 4-0 record across the top singles and doubles spots in a 2-0 week for the Oaks. The Poland native won back-to-back straight-set victories in singles (on Court 1), besting Stanislaus State's Abbigail Mulick 6-4, 6-4, then Dominican's Maria Gavrilov 6-2, 6-2. The former Jackson State player joined
Livia Harper in a 6-2 doubles win over Stan State's Mulick & Emma Yu, then helped the Oaks clinch the doubles point alongside Harper in a 7-6 (7-4) victory against Dominican's Kaylee Lopez & Sofia Acuna (both on Court 1).
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars
Azusa Pacific bounced back from a loss last week to Hawaii Pacific with three wins in the last week of February. The Cougars edged Biola 4-3, topped Redlands 4-0 and took out Stanton, 7-0. In the stressful match against the Eagles, APU dropped the doubles point in three close matches, but rallied back with straight set wins from
Karola Suvista and
Shannel Lopez to make it 2-1. On court one,
Stina Larsson won a three-setter against Kailee Mazzeo, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and
Vini Bautista won in three on court two, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against Ivet Stancheva to clinch the win. Biola then won two three-set matches on courts five and six for the 4-3 score. Suviste won all three of her singles matches during the week as the Cougars improved to 9-2 overall.
ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 17 in the February 25 ITA national poll, with
Point Loma listed at No. 21 and
Hawaii Pacific 23. The next list arrives on March 4, and will include singles and doubles rankings as well.
