The Bob Hogue Commissioner’s Cup had a brand new home last year, residing for the first time ever in San Diego at Point Loma Nazarene University.
Now, that 2024-25 trophy will have company as the Sea Lions are runaway winners of the 2025-26 crown. Point Loma secured 13.00 commissioner’s cup points, outdistancing second place Fresno Pacific (10.38).
Azusa Pacific, who won the four previous Hogue Cups prior to Point Loma’s breakthrough last year, is third with 10.27 points. This year, Point Loma led from start to finish through the Fall seasons, basketball and the spring sports. The Sea Lions won the baseball title and was second in women’s tennis and women’s golf to add to their point totals in the last few months.
Overall, they won titles in men’s soccer, volleyball (tie), men’s basketball and baseball. Perhaps more importantly, they compiled key points by placing second in women’s cross country, women’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s basketball.
“We are incrediably honored to receive the Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup and recognize that this achievement reflects the collaborative commitment our entire athletic department," said PLNU athletic director Jordan Courneya. "Our coaches, student-athletes, and administrative staff work tirelessly each day to pursue excellence, both academically and athletically, while representing Point Loma Nazarene University with faith, character, humility and integrity.
"This recognition is a testament to the positive culture that has been built across our department, one that challenges our student-athletes to grow in faith as competitors and students. We are deeply grateful for the support of our campus community, alumni, and families who make this success possible."
The Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup scoring system awards points to schools based on their finishes in conference-sponsored sports. Point totals vary from sport to sport and are based upon the number of schools competing. Regular-season standings are used for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, while the results of the conference championships in the sports of cross country, golf, track and field and tennis are factored in. When teams are tied in the standings, the points awarded to those positions are added together then distributed evenly among the schools.
In 2023-24, the name was changed from PacWest Commissioner's Cup to the Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup in honor of the retiring commissioner who led the conference for 16 years.
Behind the Sea Lions was Fresno Pacific with 10.38 points, their highest Hogue Cup finish ever. They went from third place after basketball to second place on the strength of a first place finish in men’s track and field, and third place standings in baseball, women’s track and women’s tennis.
Perennial power Azusa Pacific also made big jump to third in the spring, after sitting in fifth place through the winter. The Cougars won both tennis titles and finished second in both men’s and women’s track and field to tally 10.27 points. That put them just ahead of rival Biola (10.10), who made the largest leap from eighth to fourth on the strength of a women’s track and field title, second place finishes in softball and men’s tennis, and a third place listing in men’s track and field.
Concordia (fifth) just edged Hawaii Hilo (sixth) with 9.58 points to 9.17. The Golden Eagles won the softball title and finished second in baseball, while the Vulcans won the championships in men’s and women’s golf.
Westmont was seventh (8.00), Vanguard eighth (7.85), Dominican ninth (6.62), Menlo tenth (6.00), Hawaii Pacific eleventh (5.96), Jessup 12th (4.13) and Chaminade is 13th (3.73).
