HPU Wins 2015 PacWest Women’s Basketball Championship

IRVINE, Calif. –  Hawai’i Pacific capped off the best season in program history with its first PacWest Championship tournament title, beating California Baptist, 74-73, in the finals. The Sharks earn the PacWest’s automatic bid into the NCAA West Regional.
 
Tournament MVP Kylie Huerta scored 24 points, making 6-of-9 three-pointers. She finished the tournament with 44 points and 11 assists. Veanne Navarro had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Darsha Burnside led CBU with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Kamille Diaz had 14 points and seven assists, and Erin Asher added 15 points and five assists.
 
Diaz tied the score at 16 with a three-pointer off an offensive rebound, but HPU answered with a 12-2 run to pull ahead 28-18 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Huerta nailed a pair of pull-up threes on the run. CBU answered with a 13-3 run to close the half, accented by an Erin Asher three-pointer at the buzzer, to take a 36-33 lead at the break.
 
After four quick lead changes to start the second half, Veanne Navarro nailed back-to-back three-pointer to give HPU a 63-57 advantage at 9:52. HPU maintained the lead the remainder of the half, but CBU pulled within one in the final minute. After two HPU free throws, CBU had once shot to tie in the closing seconds, but Morganne Comstock blocked a three-pointer on the left side.
