WALNUT, Calif. – The first day of the NCAA Baseball West Regional saw California Baptist and Azusa Pacific earn impressive victories. CBU beat Dixie State in a pitcher’s duel, while APU slugged past UC San Diego.
A rain delay after the first game and more on the forecast overnight caused a change to the regional schedule. The third opening round game between Cal Poly Pomona and Point Loma was postponed until 10 a.m. Friday morning. The loser of that game will face UCSD at 1:30 p.m. and the winner will face Dixie State at 5 p.m. APU and CBU will square off at 8:30 p.m.

No. 3 Cal Baptist edged No. 3 Dixie State in the regional opener, 2-1.
Adam Hofacket earned the complete game win, allowing just five hits and striking out 11. The Lancers scored twice in the second inning on a single and a sac bunt, providing all the offence Hofacket needed. Dixie State loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but could only produce a sacrifice fly.

No. 2 APU beat No. 5 UCSD in a slugfest, 17-11, after a three hour rain delay. APU wasted no time settling into its NCAA postseason debut, scoring four runs on five-straight hits in the first inning, and following with seven runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Jordan Brower and
Michael Staudinger each drove in three runs.
Josh Staumont struck out nine in 5.1 innings for the win.
