Three PacWest Teams Still In the Hunt at NCAA Regional

WALNUT, Calif. – The PacWest was busy on the second day of the NCAA Baseball West Regional, with a member involved in all four games on the day. Azusa Pacific stands atop the bracket as the last unbeaten, Cal Baptist and Dixie State both face elimination games on Saturday, and Point Loma was eliminated.
 
Saturday’s schedule features two PacWest-CCAA elimination games. CBU will take on Cal Poly Pomona at 11 a.m. and Dixie State will face UC San Diego at 3 p.m. The winner of the CBU-CPP game will play APU at 7 p.m.

Point Loma’s first NCAA postseason appearance was short lived, as the Sea Lions lost two-straight game to become the first team eliminated from the regional. Weather forced PLNU to play the first game this morning, followed immediately by an elimination game. In the opener, top-seed Cal Poly Pomona held PLNU to just two hits in a 12-0 shutout. The Sea Lions fell behind 5-0 to UCSD in the second game, but rallied back with three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. UCSD answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Point Loma fought to the last out, putting runners on the corners with two down, but could not bring either home.

Dixie State knocked off top-seed Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1, to stay alive in the tournament. Dylan File outdueled top pro prospect Cody Ponce, allowing just two hits and striking out five in 6.2 innings. Yuto Kata broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the seventh and another run came in on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Azusa Pacific continued its hot hitting, collecting 17 knocks in a 14-5 win over Cal Baptist. APU scored three runs in the second inning, four in the fourth and four more in the eighth to improve to 2-0. Pablo O’Connor led the offense with a two-run home run and a three-run triple.
