RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The No. 1 California Baptist volleyball team had its run of 29 consecutive wins come to an end in the NCAA Division II West Regional semifinals in a four-set (25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22) loss to No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night in Van Dyne Gym.

Following the loss, California Baptist finished the season 29-1 after making its first trip in program history to the regional semifinals. Cal State San Bernardino is making its 16th trip to the regional finals in the last 18 years after defeating the top-ranked team in the nation. The Coyotes will go on to play No. 2 seed Western Washington on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
“The story of this year is going to be the confluence of events that brought this group of people together,” head coach Branden Higa said. “The coolest thing about this team is that it was so easy to be a part of. I spent all year relishing every moment.”
The Lancer offense was led by
McKenna Witt, who had 20 kills and a .326 hitting percentage along with a team-high 14 digs.
Sydney Kralj also had a double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs, while
Lauren Hackett tallied 15 kills for the Lancers.
Cal State San Bernardino had a dominant opening set for the second consecutive night, hitting .357 out of the gates to win the set 25-21. California Baptist quickly evened the match, running away with the second set 25-17 on a kill by
Madison Witt to clinch the set.
The Coyotes never trailed in the third set and held off a late push by California Baptist to take a 2-1 lead. Cal State San Bernardino again led early in the fourth set, jumping ahead 14-10. The Lancers pulled to within one at 22-21, but the Coyotes responded by winning the next two points. Lydia Morohunfola took advantage of the second match point for CSUSB to complete the upset and advance to the final.
