AZUSA, Calif. – Dixie State advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Baseball West Regional, beating California Baptist on Saturday. Azusa Pacific knocked off Cal Poly Pomona before losing to UC San Diego for the second-straight night.
Dixie State and UC San Diego will play for the West Region title on Monday at 11 a.m. Dixie State needs to beat the undefeated Tritons twice to advance.
Azusa Pacific 10 – Cal Poly Pomona 1
No. 2 Azusa Pacific held off elimination with a 10-1 win over No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona. Less than 18 hours after being one-hit by UC San Diego, APU scored seven runs on five hits in the first two innings against the Broncos.
Adrian Tovalin hit a grand slam to left field in the second inning.
Justin Gomez hit a two-run single and
Cam Bennett scored three runs.
Dillon Miyashiro earned the complete game win, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out four on 114 pitches. He retired eight-consecutive to end the game.
Dixie State 14 – California Baptist 5
No. 3 Dixie State eliminated No. 5 California Baptist with a 14-5 win in the second game of the day. The Trailblazers racked up 12 hits, including home runs from
Bryce Feist and
Logan Porter.
Dixie State scored six runs in the third inning, capped by Feist’s three-run home run to left field. CBU answered right back with three runs in the top of the fourth on a
Nick Plaia double and a
Michael Mora single. Dixie State took those three runs back over the next two innings and then Porter hit a grand slam to left field in the seventh inning.
Sean Hardman earned the win in relief for Dixie State, allowing two runs, two hits and one walk in 4.0 innings.
UC San Diego 11 – Azusa Pacific 3
APU met No. 4 UC San Diego for the second-straight night, and the Tritons eliminated the Cougars with an 11-3 win. UCSD struck early with five runs in the first three innings, and
Sean Aspinall kept APU close with a two-run home run in the second inning. The Tritons scored two unearned runs in the fifth, after two APU infield errors, and scored four more in the eighth inning.
UCSD starter
Kyle Goodbrand struck out seven in 6.2 innings. APU had four hits on the night, with Tovalin hitting his second home run of the day in the ninth inning.
