BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The 2018 PacWest volleyball season came to a conclusion on Thursday as both Chaminade and Azusa Pacific took narrow losses in the first round of the NCAA West Regional hosted by Western Washington University.
In the second quarterfinal of the day, Chaminade (23-6) took a three-set loss to the No. 1-ranked team in the nation Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes edged the Silverswords in the first and third sets for a 25-23, 25-10, 27-25 victory.
Chaminade led 22-20 in the first set, but Cal State San Bernardino (26-2) answered with a four-point run and eventually took the opening set before cruising to a two-set lead. In the third set, Chaminade had 19 of its 43 kills in the match and earned a set point at 25-24 before Cal State San Bernardino won the final three points to win the match.
Alana Handy, the PacWest Newcomer of the Year, had a team high 12 kills for the Silverswords.
Emma Tecklenburg had 10 kills in the match to finish the year as the PacWest leader in kills. The Silverswords recorded 10 blocks in the match and
Brooke Bell had a role in three of them.
In the following match, Azusa Pacific had four match points in a chance to upset No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona before falling in five sets, 22-25, 26-24, 19-25, 30-28 and 18-16. The Cougars had a set point in all five sets, but the Broncos came from behind in three of those sets for a 3-2 win. Azusa Pacific (24-7) won three more total points than Cal Poly Pomona (24-4) in the match.
Playing in its second NCAA postseason match in preseason history, the Cougars got off to a hot start as they won the first set and led 24-21 in the second set. The Broncos strung together five-consecutive points at the end of the second set to even the match at one set apiece despite the Cougars' .316 hitting percentage.
Azusa Pacific's defense dominated the third set, winning it 25-19. The Cougars finished the match with 19 blocks which is one shy of the PacWest season-high. The Broncos won a dramatic 30-28 fourth set, saving one match point to force a deciding set.
Cal Poly Pomona led early in the final set, but the Cougars fought back to tie the score at 7-7. After a kill by
Natalie Klapp, the Cougars earned a second match point at 14-13. Azusa Pacific earned two more match points, but the Broncos saved each won before eventually winning a dramatic fifth set 18-16.
Sara Wagenveld led Azusa Pacific's blocking effort with 11 blocks, while
Aliyah Morrison had six. Klapp tallied 15 kills and 20 digs in her final collegiate match.
Julianne Miller posted a .478 hitting percentage with 11 kills in the match.
