AZUSA, Calif. – California Baptist won a 15-inning game against No. 2 seed and host Azusa Pacific in the first round of the NCAA West Regional on Thursday. Later that night in a match that went past midnight, No. 4 Point Loma took a 22-3 loss to No. 3 UC San Diego.
Dylan Stowell was throwing a gem while the CBU offense built a 4-0 lead against Azusa Pacific. On Stowell's third time through the lineup the Cougars finally got to him with a two-run home run by
Osvaldo Tovalin. In the bottom of the ninth inning, California Baptist was a strike away from victory when
Griffen Herrera drove in the game-tying run, sending the game into extra-innings. After five scoreless innings, freshman
Rory Smith broke the tie for the Lancers with a double into left-center field to take a 5-4 lead. The Lancers tacked on two more runs before
Justin Montgomery threw a fourth shutout inning to secure the victory. Montgomery improved to 3-3 on the season after throwing four hitless innings with seven strikeouts.
Point Loma didn't get the start to the NCAA West Regional that it wanted, taking a 22-3 loss to No. 3 seed UC San Diego. The Tritons jumped out to an 11-0 lead after just three innings, and the Sea Lions were never able to come back.
Adrian Collazo hit a high 2-run home run into right field to give Point Loma two runs. In the ninth inning, the Sea Lions scored another on a
John Balliet double. Point Loma will now have to play against No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay to keep its season alive.
