AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific and Point Loma both kept their seasons alive as Point Loma upset No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay in a 13-12 thriller after Azusa Pacific cruised to a 17-3 victory over Chico State on Friday. In the nightcap, California Baptist took its first loss of the tournament in a 9-8 loss to No. 3 UC San Diego.
Mychael Goudreau led a Cougar offense that put 17 runs on the board by recording a PacWest season-high six hits in the leadoff position. The shortstop sparked a seven-run first inning that put the Cougars in control after just half an inning.
Layne Henderson tossed a one-run gem meanwhile with seven innings of work allowing just five hits and recording 11 strikeouts for his seventh win of the year.
A back-and-forth battle finished in Point Loma’s favor as John Balliet got a five-out save to secure the victory. Point Loma twice led by five runs in the game, but Cal State Monterey Bay put seven runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-9 lead.
Colby Kaneshiro delivered the deciding blow in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run shot to left-center field to retake the lead for good. The Otters had the go-ahead run on base with one out in the ninth inning, but Balliet struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to secure a dramatic win.
California Baptist led 6-0 after the first inning and held a 7-1 lead six innings, but that wasn’t enough to put away defending champion UC San Diego, which came back for a 9-8 win. The Tritons scored six runs in the seventh inning and added one more in both the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win.
Harrison Spohn hit a three-run home run in the first inning and finished the game 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs.
Andrew Bash only allowed two earned runs in seven innings of work with eight strikeouts, and took a no-decision.
