Hawai`i Pacific’s Madrid Leads All-PacWest Team

IRVINE, Calif. – Four different PacWest teams received end of the year awards, and Hawai`i Pacific’s Ebony Madrid leads the list, topping the 2019 All-PacWest team as the Player of the Year after leading the conference in shots, goals and points.

Madrid helped Hawai`i Pacific record its second-consecutive season with a winning record, while being the most productive forward in the conference to earn the Player of the Year award as voted on by the PacWest head coaches. In her senior season, the three-time All-PacWest honoree scored 14 goals and recorded six assists, which is tied for the most in the conference.

Biola earned both defensive awards with Madyson Brown earning recognition as the Defensive Player of the Year, while Christina Rodriguez was named the Goalkeeper of the Year. Finishing conference play with an 8-2-1 record, Biola’s defense was the toughest to score against in the PacWest in the 2019 season. Led by Brown and Rodriguez, the Eagles’ defense only allowed 12 goals all season in 18 games. Biola produced 11 shutouts this season, including a streak of seven in a row, starting on September 14.

PacWest champion Point Loma earned two awards this season, including Kristi Kiely repeating as the PacWest Coach of the Year in just her second year at the helm of the program. Makenna Herrero was voted as the PacWest Newcomer of the Year, joining Julia Glaser as the second-consecutive Sea Lion to earn the award. Point Loma also had four first-team selections. Herrero had five goals and four assists as a midfielder for Point Loma this season and earned second-team all-conference honors.

Concordia’s Jadenn Carrillo is the PacWest Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in game-winning goals with six. Carrillo led Concordia to a PacWest record of 8-1-2 and scored 11 goals on the season. Her best stretch of the season was when Concordia went on a seven-match winning streak and Carrillo scored a total of seven goals in those games including a pair of multi-goal games.

Biola and Point Loma each had four players named to the first team, including Abbi Swanson who earned her third All-PacWest recognition. Concordia also had three first-team honorees, while Academy of Art and Hawai`i Pacific each had one. Point Loma has now won 16 special awards in women’s soccer, which is the most by any team in PacWest history for women’s soccer. It is also tied for the fifth most by any single team in any single sport in PacWest history.
